Trump Has Not Decided on Renewed Military Action Against Iran, Rubio Says

Washington, Nov 2026 : US President Donald Trump has not made a decision to resume military action against Iran and is currently favouring an alternative approach, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said amid continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Rubio said the president retained the option of military action but had not taken a final decision on whether to pursue it. His remarks suggested that the US administration was currently exploring ways to address the dispute through avenues other than renewed strikes.

“The president has not made a decision. The president prefers a different approach. If he wanted to take action of that kind, he could have done so weeks or months ago,” Rubio said.

The statement does not rule out the possibility of future military action, but indicates that Washington has not officially decided to launch a new operation against Iran.

Qatar-Mediated Negotiations Continue

Rubio also referred to ongoing efforts, mediated by Qatar, to reach a possible understanding between the United States and Iran. He said he was not aware of any fixed deadline for completing the negotiations.

Qatar is playing an important role in facilitating diplomatic contacts between the two countries. The Gulf nation has previously acted as a mediator in regional disputes and is now helping efforts to keep communication channels open between Washington and Tehran.

The diplomatic process is being closely watched internationally, amid concerns that a further escalation could destabilise West Asia and disrupt regional energy supplies.

US Says National Security Interests Must Be Protected

The US Secretary of State stressed that Washington would not accept an agreement that compromised its national security interests.

Iran’s nuclear programme and broader regional security concerns remain important issues in any potential negotiations. The US administration is expected to assess whether diplomatic engagement can address these concerns while reducing the risk of further confrontation.

The remarks come as Iran has warned against possible renewed attacks, saying it would respond to any military action. Tehran’s position has added to uncertainty over the future course of the dispute.

Meanwhile, concerns remain that an escalation in the Gulf region could affect energy infrastructure, shipping routes and international oil supplies.

For now, the United States has made no official announcement of renewed military action against Iran. Attention remains focused on Qatar’s mediation efforts and Trump’s next decision, as both countries face pressure to prevent further escalation.
