Washington, Aug 2026 : US President Donald Trump has said his administration is considering acquiring additional Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as it seeks to strengthen America's position as a global hub for digital finance and encourage Congress to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets.
Speaking at a White House gathering attended by financial regulators and cryptocurrency industry leaders, Trump was asked whether his administration planned to purchase substantial quantities of Bitcoin or other digital assets. He indicated that the possibility was being actively discussed, though he did not announce any specific purchase plan or target.
“Well, it's been talked about,” Trump said, adding that he would look to senior financial regulators for recommendations before making any decision.
Trump specifically referred to Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Paul Atkins and Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chairman Michael Selig, saying he would rely on them and other officials to determine the administration's next steps on digital assets.
“I think I'd probably rely on Paul and the whole group for that,” Trump said. “He'll make a decision; you guys will make a decision, and you'll let me know, but certainly it's been talked about.”
The President also argued that the growth of cryptocurrencies had helped ease pressure on the US dollar, although he did not provide supporting data during the exchange.
“It's taken a lot of pressure off the dollar; it's been very, very good for the dollar,” Trump said, describing cryptocurrency as an increasingly important issue for the administration.
Trump highlighted measures his administration has already taken to expand the government's role in the digital-asset sector. He said he had established a US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, under which Bitcoin would be maintained as a permanent asset of the US Treasury.
“I established a United States Strategic Bitcoin Reserve making Bitcoin a permanent asset of the United States Treasury, which has turned out incredibly well,” Trump said.
He also pointed to the creation of a separate United States Digital Asset Stockpile intended to hold other cryptocurrencies and digital assets under government custody.
Trump is now urging Congress to build on those executive actions by approving the CLARITY Act, legislation designed to create clearer rules governing digital assets and define the regulatory responsibilities of federal agencies.
The President said the proposed legislation was crucial to maintaining America's competitive edge in the rapidly expanding global cryptocurrency industry.
“This landmark structure legislation will keep us ahead of China, keep us ahead of everyone else,” Trump said.
Coinbase co-founder Brian Armstrong, who attended the White House event, backed the legislation and said congressional approval would help ensure that the administration's cryptocurrency policies remain in place beyond Trump's presidency.
Armstrong pointed to a vote expected on September 15 and said the legislation could establish a durable framework that would survive changes in future administrations.
“This would make all of the progress that this administration has made durable into the future, so it could survive for decades and decades to come,” Armstrong said.
He acknowledged that the legislation could face opposition from some major banks concerned about competition from cryptocurrency companies, although other financial institutions have supported the measure. Armstrong said supporters were hoping to secure more than 60 votes.
He also described the legislation as a bipartisan compromise, noting that Democrats had contributed hundreds of pages of proposed changes during negotiations.
Meanwhile, Selig said US financial regulators would continue advancing the administration's cryptocurrency agenda while Congress considers the proposed legislation.
“Clear rules create confidence; confidence attracts investment; and investment creates jobs, strengthens our markets and keeps the world's best talent building here in America,” Selig said.
The administration's push signals an effort to move cryptocurrency further into the US financial mainstream while establishing regulatory certainty for investors, financial institutions and digital-asset companies. The debate over the CLARITY Act is expected to determine how far that strategy advances and whether Congress can translate Trump's crypto policies into lasting law.
