Kolkata, Aug 2026 : West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday said an FIR would be registered against former Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee for allegedly violating conditions imposed by the Calcutta High Court for a rally held in central Kolkata.
The controversy relates to Friday’s foundation day programme of the Trinamool Congress student wing, Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP). The Calcutta High Court had granted conditional permission to the Mamata Banerjee-led faction of the Trinamool Congress to organise the rally.
Among the conditions imposed by the court was a direction that the rally should remain confined to one lane of the road, while the other lane was required to remain free to ensure the uninterrupted movement of traffic. However, allegations emerged that the organisers failed to comply with the restrictions.
Adhikari, while speaking to reporters on Saturday, claimed that the alleged violations were clearly visible during the rally and said he had instructed the state police to initiate legal action.
“The Court clearly directed us to conduct the rally keeping one of the two lanes free for traffic movement. The former Chief Minister assembled people and blocked both the lanes. I have directed the police to register an FIR in the matter. I have also directed the police to approach the Calcutta High Court in the matter. The matter will not be taken so easily,” the Chief Minister said.
The issue has also received support from Ritabrata Banerjee, leader of the rebel faction within the Trinamool Congress and the current Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly. He backed the allegations that the organisers had breached the conditions laid down by the High Court.
According to Banerjee, the court had specified both the maximum number of participants and the requirement that the gathering remain restricted to one side of the road. He alleged that Mamata Banerjee encouraged some of her supporters to remove barricades separating the two lanes and occupy the entire stretch of the road.
“The Calcutta High Court gave a specific direction on the maximum number of people that would be allowed to participate in the rally, while ordering the restriction of the rally to a single-lane. The former Chief Minister was seen inciting a section of her followers to break the barricades dividing the two lanes and occupy the entire road,” Banerjee alleged.
He further criticised what he described as the former Chief Minister’s approach towards the court-imposed restrictions.
At the time of filing the report, there had been no response from the Mamata Banerjee-led faction of the Trinamool Congress to the allegations or the proposed FIR.
The dispute comes amid an increasingly charged political atmosphere in West Bengal, with both the ruling BJP and the Trinamool Congress intensifying their attacks on each other.
Addressing the TMCP foundation day rally on Friday afternoon, Mamata Banerjee criticised the BJP government in the state and predicted that the party would lose support among its own workers and supporters.
She claimed that the alleged excesses of the BJP-led government would ultimately benefit the Trinamool Congress and help the party return to power in West Bengal.
“The ordinary BJP supporters will teach their own party leadership a lesson soon. Very soon Trinamool Congress will return to power in West Bengal,” Banerjee said.
The proposed police action over the alleged violation of the High Court’s conditions is now likely to add another dimension to the political confrontation between the two camps.
