Cyberattack Hits Japan Airlines, Halts Ticket Sales
Japan Airlines (JAL) announced on December 26 that a cyberattack had disrupted its systems, causing delays for domestic and international flights. The attack, which began at 7:25 am, affected both internal and external operations. In response, JAL suspended ticket sales for all flights departing that day to mitigate the impact.
JAL acted swiftly to shut down the compromised router that triggered the malfunction and has been working to restore its systems. The airline is collaborating with the Metropolitan Police Department to trace the origin of the attack. Passengers were assured their existing bookings were unaffected.
In a statement shared on social media, JAL apologized for the disruption, saying, “We regret the inconvenience caused by this incident. Our team is actively investigating the cause and monitoring the recovery process.”
Notably, ANA Holdings, Japan’s second-largest airline, confirmed its systems remained unaffected by the incident.
This cyberattack follows a similar event earlier this week when American Airlines grounded all flights for an hour on Christmas Eve due to a network hardware issue, disrupting travel plans for thousands. The increasing frequency of such incidents underscores the need for enhanced cybersecurity measures in the aviation industry.
