Vijay Hails Record Voter Turnout as ‘Festival of Democracy’ in Tamil Nadu Polls

Chennai, April 2026 : Actor-turned-politician Vijay on Friday expressed heartfelt gratitude to the people of Tamil Nadu for the historic voter turnout of 85 per cent in the recently concluded single-phase Assembly elections, calling it a defining moment in the state’s democratic journey.

In a message shared on social media platform X, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief described the unprecedented participation as a powerful assertion of people’s will, breaking long-standing perceptions that politics is dominated only by influential or experienced figures. He said the massive turnout demonstrated that ordinary citizens have the ability to reshape political narratives.

“Greetings to everyone who resides in my heart. The illusions created by those who confined politics within the limits of powerful or highly experienced individuals have now been shattered by ordinary people,” Vijay said, emphasising the transformative nature of the electoral participation.

The 2026 Assembly elections marked a milestone in Tamil Nadu’s history, recording the highest voter turnout since Independence. The surge was largely driven by enthusiastic participation from youth and women voters, who turned up in large numbers across all 234 constituencies, contributing to the record-breaking figure.

Vijay described the polling day as a true “festival of democracy,” noting that the atmosphere at polling booths resembled the vibrancy of cultural and religious gatherings. He highlighted how families, including children, visited polling stations together, reflecting a deep sense of civic engagement and celebration.

“An 85 per cent voter turnout is something Tamil Nadu has never witnessed before. Only yesterday did we truly experience why elections are called a ‘festival of democracy.’ April 23, 2026, will remain a defining day,” he said.

The TVK leader also extended special appreciation to first-time voters and those who travelled long distances, including from other states and abroad, to cast their votes. He said such commitment underscores the strength of democratic values among citizens and deserves widespread recognition.

Acknowledging the efforts within his party, Vijay praised the dedication of TVK’s grassroots workers, including booth agents and administrators, who remained steadfast despite facing criticism during the campaign. He noted that the overwhelming voter turnout itself was a fitting response to those who questioned the political awareness and capabilities of his party cadre.

Looking ahead to the election results, Vijay struck an optimistic tone, expressing confidence in his party’s prospects in what is shaping up to be a closely contested triangular fight. The contest involves the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance and the opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)-led National Democratic Alliance.

“Let us remain hopeful. Good things will happen. Victory is certain,” he said, signalling confidence in the outcome.

With record participation setting the tone, the election results are now eagerly awaited, as Tamil Nadu prepares for a potentially significant political shift shaped by an energized electorate.
