Washington, April 2026: US President Donald Trump is set to dispatch special envoys to Pakistan to engage with Iranian representatives, signaling a renewed diplomatic push amid indications of progress in ongoing efforts to ease tensions.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the administration has decided to send envoys, including Jared Kushner and another senior representative, to Islamabad for in-person discussions with Iranian officials. She noted that Tehran has expressed willingness to engage directly, calling it a positive development.

“The Iranians want to talk, and they want to talk in person,” Leavitt said, adding that the envoys would travel to Pakistan to “hear the Iranians out.” She emphasised that the US administration remains open to dialogue and is committed to giving diplomacy a meaningful chance.

According to Leavitt, Washington has observed “some progress” from the Iranian side in recent days, though she did not clarify whether Iran has presented a unified or formal proposal ahead of the talks. Senior US leadership, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, will remain in Washington while closely monitoring the outcome of the discussions. Leavitt added that the vice president is on standby and could be deployed to Pakistan if necessary, depending on how the talks progress.

The announcement also coincides with broader diplomatic efforts by the US in the Middle East. Leavitt confirmed that the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has been extended, describing it as a significant achievement for American diplomacy. She credited the administration for facilitating continued dialogue between the two sides and expressed optimism about further engagement.

“We are grateful to both Israel and Lebanon for choosing to continue conversations,” she said, adding that there is hope leaders from both countries could eventually be hosted in Washington as part of ongoing peace efforts.

On the domestic front, Leavitt also addressed questions regarding an investigation into the financial management of the Federal Reserve. She clarified that while the probe has been shifted to a different authority, it remains active and ongoing under the oversight of the Inspector General.

The decision to send envoys underscores Washington’s dual-track approach of maintaining pressure while pursuing diplomatic openings, as it seeks to stabilise the region and address long-standing concerns over Iran’s policies.
