Stoinis’ Explosive Finish Powers Punjab Kings to 222/4 Against Rajasthan Royals
New Chandigarh, April 2026 : A breathtaking late assault by Marcus Stoinis and a composed half-century from Prabhsimran Singh propelled Punjab Kings to a commanding 222/4 against Rajasthan Royals in Match 40 of the Indian Premier League 2026 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh.
Punjab Kings began their innings with attacking intent, taking on the pace of Jofra Archer right from the outset. Although Archer kept things tight initially, Prabhsimran signaled his aggressive approach early with a boundary. The momentum, however, surged dramatically when Priyansh Arya launched a fierce counterattack during the powerplay.
Arya took apart Nandre Burger with fearless strokeplay, including a stunning backfoot six over covers. His aggressive approach saw Burger concede 21 runs in a single over, putting Rajasthan Royals under immediate pressure. Arya’s explosive knock, played at a remarkable strike rate, threatened to take the game away early.
The contest between Arya and Archer became a highlight of the innings. After surviving a couple of chances, Arya continued to attack until Archer responded with a fiery 150.1 kph delivery to dismiss him, bringing an end to a thrilling cameo and restoring some balance.
Following Arya’s departure, Prabhsimran Singh took charge of the innings. He maintained a brisk scoring rate, finding boundaries with ease and rotating the strike effectively. By the end of the powerplay, Punjab Kings had raced to 65/1, with Prabhsimran leading from the front.
In the middle overs, Prabhsimran continued to dominate both pace and spin. He took on Ravindra Jadeja with confident strokeplay, dispatching deliveries straight down the ground and over midwicket. Despite wickets falling at the other end, he held the innings together with determination and composure.
Young bowler Yash Punja made a notable impact for Rajasthan Royals, picking up crucial wickets. He first dismissed Cooper Connolly with a cleverly disguised googly and later removed Prabhsimran, who had anchored the innings with a well-fought 59 off 35 deliveries. His knock, though not entirely flawless, proved vital in stabilising Punjab after the early fireworks.
Captain Shreyas Iyer struggled to find rhythm but contributed a steady 30 off 27 balls before falling to Burger. Rajasthan Royals managed to regain some control during this phase, with their bowlers tightening the scoring and preventing Punjab from accelerating further.
However, the match took a dramatic turn in the final overs, courtesy of Marcus Stoinis. Walking in during the latter stages, Stoinis unleashed a sensational display of power-hitting that completely shifted momentum. Partnering briefly with Iyer for a 37-run stand, he soon took center stage with an extraordinary assault.
Stoinis targeted the bowlers with precision and brute force, smashing boundaries and clearing the ropes with ease. His onslaught peaked in the final over against Archer, where he hammered 24 runs, including multiple sixes and fours. The Australian all-rounder remained unbeaten on a blistering 62 off just 22 deliveries, an innings studded with four fours and six towering sixes.
He continued his dominance into the penultimate over as well, punishing Brijesh Sharma despite the bowler’s earlier disciplined spell. Stoinis’ late blitz ensured Punjab Kings surged past the 200-run mark and finished with an imposing total.
For Rajasthan Royals, the bowling effort was a mixed bag. While Punja impressed with figures of 2/41 and Archer picked up one wicket, others struggled to contain the flow of runs, especially in the death overs.
With a formidable total of 222/4 on the board, Punjab Kings have placed themselves in a strong position, thanks largely to Prabhsimran’s stability and Stoinis’ explosive finish. The onus now shifts to Rajasthan Royals to produce a strong batting response in what promises to be a high-scoring encounter.
Brief Scores:
Punjab Kings 222/4 in 20 overs (Marcus Stoinis 62*, Prabhsimran Singh 59; Yash Punja 2/41, Jofra Archer 1/40) vs Rajasthan Royals.*
