Instructions Issued to Identify Land for Setting Up Shelter for Stray Animals Quarterly Review Meeting of Mumbai Suburban Animal Cruelty Prevention Committee
Mumbai, April 2026 : The quarterly review meeting of the Mumbai Suburban District Animal Cruelty Prevention Committee was held at the Collector’s Office in Bandra under the chairmanship of Sub-Divisional Officer (General Administration) and Committee Chairman Subhash Kakade.
During the meeting, Chairman Kakade directed all concerned departments to jointly inspect suitable land for establishing an animal shelter and submit a comprehensive report on priority.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioner of the Animal Husbandry Department Dr. Vijay Tukaram Sawant, General Manager of Deonar Abattoir Dr. Kalim Pasha Pathan, Senior Veterinary Officer Dr. Y. D. Agarkar, Livestock Development Officer of Deonar Abattoir Dr. Prasad Gholap, Assistant Commissioner of the Animal Husbandry Department Dr. Daminik Khawaskar, Junior Veterinary Officer Dr. Ganesh Thorat, Police Inspector Vitthal Ardekar, Motor Vehicle Inspector Arvind Todkari from the Regional Transport Office (East Mumbai), and Motor Vehicle Inspector Samadhan Mahanankar from the Borivali Regional Transport Office, among others.
At the beginning of the meeting, the minutes of the previous meeting were unanimously approved. Thereafter, detailed discussions were held on the identification of land for the proposed animal shelter.
In compliance with the orders of the Hon’ble Supreme Court, a guiding committee had earlier been formed to inspect suitable land for establishing shelters for stray animals. Accordingly, detailed information regarding land in the Malvani area of Malad was presented. Alternative sites in Chembur (East) and Mulund (East) were also discussed.
Against this backdrop, Chairman Kakade directed coordination with the Borivali Tehsildar to identify suitable open land in the Mumbai suburban area, conduct a joint site inspection, and submit an urgent report.
In view of Bakri Eid, instructions were also issued to strictly monitor the safe transportation of animals, validity of slaughterhouses, and medical examination of animals.
Detailed discussions were also held on various animal welfare-related issues during the meeting.
