Justice (Retd.) Anupinder Singh Grewal Appointed President of NCLT
New Delhi, April 2026 : The Centre has approved the appointment of Anupinder Singh Grewal as the President of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), a key judicial body that adjudicates corporate disputes and insolvency matters in India.
The decision was cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet following a proposal from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, according to an official notification issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). Justice Grewal will hold the post for a term of five years from the date he assumes charge or until he attains the age of 67 years, whichever is earlier.
He will receive a fixed pay as per the prescribed scale for the position. Justice Grewal succeeds Ramalingam Sudhakar, who had been serving as the President of the tribunal since November 2021 and demitted office earlier this year.
The NCLT plays a crucial role in India’s corporate legal framework, handling cases related to the Companies Act as well as insolvency proceedings under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code. Its functioning is central to ensuring timely resolution of corporate disputes and maintaining financial discipline in the business ecosystem.
Born on March 10, 1964, in Ludhiana district of Punjab, Justice Grewal comes from an agriculturist background. He completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in History from St. Stephen’s College, graduating in 1985 and 1987 respectively. He later pursued a law degree from the University of Delhi, completing his LL.B. in 1992.
He began his legal career the same year at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, gradually building a strong profile in constitutional and civil matters. Over the years, he held several important positions representing the Punjab government, including Assistant Advocate General, Deputy Advocate General, Senior Deputy Advocate General, and Additional Advocate General.
In 2009, he was appointed Senior Panel Counsel for the Central government at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, a role he held until his elevation to the Bench. Justice Grewal was appointed as an Additional Judge of the High Court in September 2014. Shortly thereafter, he was transferred to the Rajasthan High Court, where he became a permanent judge in May 2016.
He later returned to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in October 2016, continuing his judicial service until retirement. With extensive experience across litigation and the judiciary, his appointment as NCLT President is expected to strengthen the tribunal’s role in handling complex corporate and insolvency cases.
