Trump Congratulates Ali al-Zaidi on Iraq PM Nomination, Signals Stronger US–Iraq Relations
Washington, May 2026 : US President Donald Trump on Thursday congratulated Ali al-Zaidi on his nomination as Iraq’s next Prime Minister, expressing optimism about a new phase in bilateral relations and offering Washington’s support for Iraq’s ongoing political transition.
In a post shared on his official social media platform, Trump welcomed the development and extended his wishes for success to the Iraqi leader-designate as he moves forward in forming a new government.
“Congratulations to Ali al-Zaidi on his nomination to be the next Prime Minister of Iraq!” Trump wrote.
He further stated that the United States hopes the new leadership in Baghdad will prioritize stability, governance reforms, and national security, particularly in addressing terrorism-related threats that have long affected the country.
“We wish him success as he works to form a new government free from terrorism that could deliver a brighter future for Iraq,” the US President said.
Trump also highlighted the potential for strengthening diplomatic and strategic cooperation between Washington and Baghdad under al-Zaidi’s leadership. He expressed confidence that the nomination could mark the beginning of a renewed partnership between the two nations.
“We look forward to a strong, vibrant, and highly productive new relationship between Iraq and the United States,” he said.
Describing the development as a turning point, Trump suggested that it could open a “tremendous new chapter” in bilateral relations, marked by progress in multiple sectors.
“This is the beginning of a tremendous new chapter between our nations — prosperity, stability, and success like never seen before,” he added, concluding his message with a personal note: “Again, Ali, congratulations!”
The statement comes at a politically sensitive moment for Iraq, which is undergoing a key transition in its leadership. The United States, which maintains a long-standing diplomatic and strategic presence in Iraq, has reiterated its commitment to supporting the country’s political stability and sovereignty.
American officials have described their diplomatic mission in Iraq as focused on sustaining a long-term strategic partnership with both the Iraqi government and its people.
In coordination with the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, the United States played a key role in supporting Iraq’s efforts that culminated in the December 2017 liberation of the country from ISIS control. Following this milestone, Washington expanded its efforts toward stabilising liberated regions and supporting Iraq’s reconstruction and development.
US officials continue to view Iraq as a key regional partner in the Middle East, noting its growing role in promoting stability and cooperation in the region.
Iraq currently maintains functioning democratic institutions, including an active parliament, and continues to engage with the United States across diplomatic, political, economic, and security domains.
These engagements are conducted under the US-Iraq Strategic Framework Agreement (SFA), which serves as the foundation for long-term bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
As Iraq moves toward forming a new government, the United States has signaled its willingness to continue supporting efforts aimed at ensuring stability, strengthening institutions, and promoting economic growth in the country.
