Bengal Turns the Tide: Suvendu Topples Mamata as BJP Surge Redefines 2026 Verdict

The 2026 West Bengal Assembly election is shaping up as one of the most dramatic political shifts in recent memory,

with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) poised for a sweeping victory that could end the 15-year rule of Mamata Banerjee and her All India Trinamool Congress (TMC). At the heart of this political upheaval is the high-profile defeat of Banerjee by her long-time rival Suvendu Adhikari in the Bhabanipur constituency, symbolising a decisive shift in voter sentiment.

The election, marked by an impressive 92 percent voter turnout, reflects an energized electorate seeking change. While counting is still underway in several constituencies, early trends and declared results point toward a strong BJP surge across urban, semi-urban, and even traditional TMC strongholds.

The Big Winners

Among the standout performers is Humayun Kabir of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party, who secured emphatic victories from both Nowda and Rejinagar, winning by margins exceeding 27,000 and 58,000 votes respectively—one of the most dominant performances in the state.

In a contest charged with emotional significance, Ratna Debnath, mother of the RG Kar hospital victim, emerged as a key figure. Contesting from Panihati on a BJP ticket, she took an early lead, turning her campaign into a symbol of justice and public sentiment.

Kolkata witnessed major upsets as BJP candidates made deep inroads. Sankar Sikder defeated TMC minister Subhasish Chakraborty by over 25,000 votes in Behala Purba, while Tapas Roy secured a convincing win in Maniktala, defeating Shrreya Pande by more than 15,000 votes.

Another significant victory came from Agnimitra Paul, who triumphed in Asansol Dakshin with a margin of over 40,000 votes. In Murshidabad, Gouri Sankar Ghosh defeated TMC’s Shaoni Singha Roy, highlighting BJP’s growing footprint in regions once considered out of its reach.

Despite the BJP wave, the TMC managed to hold on in select pockets. Nandita Chowdhury retained the Howrah Dakshin seat, and Nayna Bandyopadhyay secured a comfortable win in Chowrangee, showing that the party still commands loyalty in certain urban segments.

The Big Losers

The most consequential defeat of the election is that of Mamata Banerjee herself. Losing Bhabanipur to Suvendu Adhikari by over 15,000 votes, the setback is both symbolic and strategic, raising questions about the future direction of the TMC.

Senior TMC leader Siddiqullah Chowdhury also suffered a major defeat in East Burdwan, losing to BJP’s Saikat Panja by a margin exceeding 14,000 votes. Similarly, minister Shashi Panja was defeated in Shyampukur by BJP’s Purnima Chakraborty, underlining the scale of anti-incumbency.

In Asansol Uttar, Moloy Ghatak lost to BJP’s Krishnendu Mukherjee, while in Jhargram, tribal leader Mongal Saren was defeated by Lakshmi Kanta Sau, signalling a shift in the politically crucial Junglemahal region.

Urban losses further compounded TMC’s troubles, with Kolkata Deputy Mayor Atin Ghosh losing a close contest in Kashipur-Belgachhia to BJP’s Ritesh Tiwari. Meanwhile, Congress veteran Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was defeated in Baharampur by BJP candidate Subrata Maitra, reflecting the broader decline of Congress in the state.

A Political Watershed

Taken together, these results indicate more than just an electoral victory—they point to a structural realignment in West Bengal politics. The BJP’s rise from a marginal player to a dominant force underscores a deep shift in voter preferences, cutting across caste, class, and regional lines.

While final results are still awaited, the 2026 verdict is already being seen as a watershed moment—one that could redefine governance, opposition dynamics, and political narratives in West Bengal for years to come.
