Stalin Accepts Verdict, Says DMK Will Play Constructive Opposition Role as TVK Reshapes Tamil Nadu Politics

Chennai, May 2026 : Outgoing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin on Monday accepted the people’s mandate in the Assembly elections, stating that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) would now serve as a “constructive and effective Opposition” in the state.

In a message shared on social media, Stalin congratulated the winning candidates and affirmed his respect for the democratic verdict. Reflecting on his tenure, he подчеркed that his government had implemented a wide array of welfare schemes and driven development across sectors, seeking a renewed mandate based on its governance record.

“We governed for all people, including those who did not vote for us. I remained committed to every section and acted according to my conscience,” Stalin said, expressing gratitude to voters, party workers, and allies from the Secular Progressive Alliance.

Highlighting resilience in public life, he added that political journeys are defined by both victories and setbacks. “What matters is our ideology and purpose. The DMK’s journey will continue without any slack,” he said, signalling the party’s intent to remain active and relevant despite the electoral loss.

The 2026 Assembly election results, however, marked a dramatic shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. Actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay led his party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), to a remarkable debut performance, emerging as the single largest party in the state.

According to data from the Election Commission of India as of 8:40 p.m., TVK had won 82 seats and was leading in 25 constituencies. In comparison, the DMK secured 44 seats and led in 16, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) won 34 seats and was ahead in 13.

In one of the most significant upsets of the election, Stalin himself lost the Kolathur Assembly seat to TVK candidate V. S. Babu by a margin of 8,795 votes, ending his long-standing hold over the constituency.

Despite the setback, the DMK retained pockets of strength, winning seats such as Gudalur, Coonoor, and Valparai. Allies also registered victories, with Congress candidate Viswanathan winning in Melur and CPI’s T. Ramachandran securing Thally.

The elections to the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly were conducted in a single phase on April 23, witnessing a high voter turnout of 85.1 percent, with more than 4.8 crore votes cast—underscoring strong public participation in shaping the state’s new political direction.
