Kolhapuri Chappals to Emerge as Global Luxury Product, Says Maharashtra CM
Mumbai, April 2029 : Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the iconic Kolhapuri chappal, crafted by generations of skilled artisans in the state, is now poised to become a global luxury product, showcasing the strength of the “Made in India” initiative on the world stage.
Highlighting the importance of preserving and promoting traditional craftsmanship, Fadnavis said that the legacy of Indian leather artistry, particularly Kolhapuri chappals, is gaining international recognition. He noted that a recent partnership between global luxury brand Prada and LIDCOM aims to take this heritage to new heights.
Under this collaboration, Prada will fully fund a special training programme for traditional leather artisans over the next three years. The initiative will be conducted at premier institutions such as the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and the Karnataka Institute of Leather and Fashion Technology. The programme is designed to equip artisans from Maharashtra and Karnataka with modern design techniques, advanced technical skills, and insights into global market trends.
The Chief Minister emphasised that the initiative will help blend traditional craftsmanship with contemporary innovation, ensuring that artisans remain competitive in global markets while preserving their cultural heritage.
Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat described the agreement with Prada as a moment of pride, stating that it not only recognises the hard work of artisans but also celebrates India’s rich cultural traditions. He added that collaboration with a global brand would provide artisans with international exposure and ensure they receive due credit for their craftsmanship.
Minister of State Madhuri Misal highlighted the role of LIDCOM in conceptualising and executing the partnership effectively. Senior officials noted that the agreement was carefully structured, keeping in mind international laws, global partnerships, and intellectual property rights, with a strong focus on protecting the generational rights of artisans.
As part of the programme, around 300 artisans will receive specialised training, while the top 30 performers will get an opportunity for advanced training at Prada’s academy in Italy. The curriculum will include design innovation, technical expertise, digital tools, and evolving market dynamics, enabling artisans to adapt to modern consumer demands without losing their traditional identity.
LIDCOM Managing Director Prerna Deshbhratar termed the partnership a landmark moment for Indian handicrafts, noting that the organisation has been working for over five decades to safeguard the dignity, livelihood, and rights of leather artisans in Maharashtra. Established in 1974 under the Social Justice Department, LIDCOM has played a key role in preserving traditional leather craftsmanship and securing a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Kolhapuri chappals in 2009.
The collaboration process began following Prada’s Spring 2026 menswear showcase, after which a delegation from the brand visited Kolhapur to interact with artisans. The formal agreement was later signed at the Italian Consulate in Mumbai.
The initiative is expected to provide a significant boost to traditional artisans, ensuring that the centuries-old legacy of Kolhapuri chappals gains a prominent place in the global luxury market while empowering the communities behind its creation.
