DMK Suffers Major Setback as TVK Surge Reshapes Tamil Nadu Politics
Chennai, May 2026 : The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has suffered a significant electoral setback in the recently concluded Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, managing to win only around 59 of the 164 constituencies it contested and being pushed into the Opposition.
The election witnessed an intense three-cornered contest between the DMK, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). The ruling DMK struggled to retain its dominance amid a strong surge by TVK, which significantly altered the political dynamics of the state.
The scale of the defeat was underscored by the loss of several high-profile leaders, including Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, senior ministers, and even the Assembly Speaker. The results reflected a pronounced wave of anti-incumbency across regions.
Among the prominent defeats, Health Minister M. Subramanian lost in Saidapet by nearly 28,500 votes, while School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi was defeated in Tiruverumbur. Minister T.R.B. Rajaa lost in Mannargudi, and Minister Moorthy was defeated in Madurai East by a margin exceeding 16,500 votes.
Finance Minister P.T.R. Palanivel Thiagarajan faced an unexpected defeat in Madurai Central, where a TVK candidate secured victory in a tightly contested multi-cornered fight. Senior leaders such as K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran and Thangam Thennarasu also lost their respective constituencies, indicating a widespread erosion of support.
Veteran DMK leader Durai Murugan was defeated in Katpadi by more than 7,600 votes, while Minister Muthusamy lost in Erode West by over 22,000 votes. Other ministers who faced defeat included Nassar (Avadi), Mathivendhan (Rasipuram), R. Rajendran (Salem North), Gandhi (Ranipet), and Saminathan (Kangeyam). In Alandur, T.M. Anbarasan suffered a loss by a margin exceeding 25,000 votes.
One of the closest contests occurred in Tiruppattur, where Minister Periyakaruppan lost by a single vote, highlighting the fiercely competitive nature of the election.
Despite the widespread setbacks, a section of the DMK leadership managed to retain their seats. Udhayanidhi Stalin won from Chepauk by over 7,300 votes, while Minister Sekarbabu secured victory in Harbour. Senior leaders K.N. Nehru and I. Periyasamy also retained their constituencies, Tiruchirappalli West and Athoor respectively.
Chakrapani won from Oddanchatram with a comfortable margin, and E.V. Velu narrowly held Tiruvannamalai. Ministers M.R.K. Panneerselvam, Meyyanathan, C.V. Ganesan, and K. Chezhiyan were also among those who registered victories. Additionally, Anita Radhakrishnan won in Tiruchendur, while Raghupathi, Sivashankar, and Rajakannappan secured wins in their respective constituencies.
The results signal a decisive shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. The emergence of TVK as a major force has disrupted traditional voting patterns, weakening the long-standing dominance of both the DMK and the AIADMK.
With only a limited number of its leaders retaining seats, the DMK now faces the challenge of rebuilding its support base as it transitions into the role of the Opposition after its term in power.
