M.K. Stalin Resigns as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister After DMK Faces Major Electoral Defeat

Chennai, May 2026 : In the aftermath of a significant electoral setback in Tamil Nadu, M. K. Stalin has resigned from the post of Chief Minister. A formal resignation letter was submitted to Governor Rajendra Arlekar at Raj Bhavan (Lok Bhavan), following the declaration of Assembly election results that confirmed a clear loss of majority for the DMK-led alliance.

Sources confirmed that the resignation reached the Governor’s office shortly after it became evident that the ruling coalition had fallen well short of the required numbers in the 234-member Assembly. As per constitutional convention, the Governor is expected to request Stalin to continue as caretaker Chief Minister until a new government is formed and assumes office.

The DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), which entered the election with high expectations of retaining power, managed to secure only 73 seats in total. This includes the DMK’s own tally of around 60 seats, marking a steep decline compared to its previous performance and effectively pushing the alliance into the Opposition.

The scale of the defeat has been particularly striking for the DMK, which contested 164 constituencies but failed to retain its earlier dominance across key regions. The result reflects a broad shift in voter sentiment and a major realignment in the state’s political landscape.

In one of the most significant political developments of the election, Stalin himself suffered a rare personal defeat in his stronghold of Kolathur. He was defeated by V.S. Babu of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), making him one of the very few sitting Chief Ministers in Tamil Nadu’s history to lose an Assembly election. The last comparable instance dates back to 1996, when former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa faced electoral defeat.

Babu’s victory in Kolathur is being viewed as politically significant, not only because of Stalin’s defeat but also due to his own past association with the DMK before switching sides. His win is widely interpreted as a reflection of shifting voter preferences and the emergence of new political forces reshaping Tamil Nadu politics.

The election has delivered a fractured mandate overall. TVK, led by actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay, has emerged as the single largest party but remains short of the majority mark, leading to intense post-poll discussions and alliance negotiations.

With no clear majority, political parties are now engaged in backchannel talks to explore possible government formation scenarios. The Governor is expected to begin consultations shortly as per constitutional procedure.

Meanwhile, internal discussions have begun within the DMK to analyse the reasons behind the unexpected defeat. Sources indicate that Stalin is likely to assume the role of Leader of Opposition in the new Assembly, marking a transition for the party after a term in power.

As Tamil Nadu awaits clarity on its next government, the political landscape stands at a historic crossroads, shaped by a mandate that has redefined traditional power equations in the state.
