EC Orders Crackdown on Post-Poll Violence in West Bengal After BJP’s Landslide Victory
May 2026 : In the aftermath of the Assembly election results in West Bengal, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday issued strict instructions to state authorities, calling for zero tolerance towards any incidents of post-poll violence. The directive was sent to the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) deployed across the state, urging immediate and firm action.
The Commission’s intervention came following reports of violence emerging from several districts since Monday evening, shortly after the results were declared. According to officials, the ECI has asked authorities to ensure that law and order is maintained and that any attempts to disrupt peace are dealt with decisively.
The Trinamool Congress alleged that its workers and offices were targeted in multiple locations by supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which secured a sweeping victory in the elections. Among the reported incidents, the party office of former MLA Aroop Biswas in Tollygunge, south Kolkata, was allegedly vandalised. Another office in the Beliaghata area was also attacked, with claims that a party worker was assaulted during the violence.
Additionally, the Trinamool Congress claimed that a party office linked to Abhishek Banerjee in Amtala came under mob attack, further raising concerns about the security situation in the state. These allegations have intensified political tensions following a historic electoral shift.
The elections marked a major political turnaround, with the BJP ending the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress. The party registered a decisive victory by winning 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly, while the Trinamool Congress saw a steep decline, securing just 80 seats compared to its dominant performance in 2021.
In response to the unfolding situation, Kolkata Police also issued a public advisory warning against the spread of misinformation on social media. Authorities cautioned that strict legal action would be taken against individuals sharing fake or misleading content intended to incite unrest.
Police officials stated that the overall situation in Kolkata remains under control and appealed to citizens to act responsibly. The advisory came amid a surge in viral posts and videos circulating online, many of which allegedly depicted violence related to the election results.
The Election Commission’s firm stance underscores the seriousness of the situation, as it seeks to prevent further escalation and ensure a peaceful transition of power. With heightened political sensitivities and sporadic incidents of unrest being reported, authorities are under pressure to maintain stability and uphold public confidence in the democratic process.
