Congress Leaves Decision on Supporting Vijay’s TVK to Tamil Nadu Unit Amid Hung Assembly

May 2026 : In the wake of a fractured mandate in Tamil Nadu, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Tuesday said it has entrusted its state unit with the responsibility of deciding whether to support C. Joseph Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), in forming the next government.

Clarifying the party’s stance, AICC General Secretary (Organisation) K. C. Venugopal said the election results reflect a clear public preference for a secular government committed to upholding constitutional values. He stressed that the Congress remains firm in its resolve to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or its “proxies” from playing any role in shaping the new administration in the state.

Venugopal noted that the sentiments expressed by voters would guide the final decision. Accordingly, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) has been authorised to evaluate Vijay’s request and take a call based on ground realities and political consultations.

The development follows a closely contested Assembly election that produced a hung verdict. TVK, contesting its first election under Vijay’s leadership, emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, falling just short of the majority mark of 118. The outcome has significantly altered the state’s political dynamics, traditionally dominated by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

Vijay’s rapid political ascent, backed by strong support from youth and urban voters, has positioned the TVK as a key player in the post-election scenario. With no party securing a clear majority, alliances and post-poll negotiations are expected to determine the formation of the next government.

In his outreach to the Congress leadership, Vijay is believed to have invoked the legacy of K. Kamaraj, widely revered as “Perunthalaivar,” emphasising a governance approach centred on integrity, simplicity, and people-centric policies. His appeal appears aimed at aligning with Congress’ ideological roots and securing its backing.

Sources indicate that the TNCC is likely to hold consultations with senior party leaders and newly elected legislators before arriving at a final decision. The Congress’ position is widely seen as pivotal, as its support could enable TVK to cross the majority threshold and stake claim to power.

As political negotiations intensify, all eyes are now on the Congress’ Tamil Nadu unit, whose decision could shape the state’s next government and redefine its political trajectory.
