Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan Appointed New Chief of Naval Staff
New Delhi, May 2026 : The Government on Friday appointed Krishna Swaminathan as the next Chief of Naval Staff, succeeding Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, who is scheduled to retire on May 31.
Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan currently serves as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, a position he assumed on July 31 last year. With his appointment as the new Navy chief, he will take charge of one of the country’s most strategically important military services at a time when India is strengthening maritime security and expanding its naval capabilities in the Indian Ocean region.
Commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987, Vice Admiral Swaminathan is a specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare and brings with him nearly four decades of operational, strategic and leadership experience.
He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy at Khadakvasla, the Joint Services Command and Staff College in Shrivenham, United Kingdom, the College of Naval Warfare at Karanja, and the United States Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the Admiral has held several important operational, staff and training appointments throughout his distinguished naval career. He commanded missile vessels INS Vidyut and INS Vinash, the missile corvette INS Kulish, the guided missile destroyer INS Mysore and the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya.
Following his promotion to Rear Admiral, he served as Chief Staff Officer (Training) at the Headquarters of the Southern Naval Command in Kochi, where he played a key role in overseeing and modernising training programmes across the Navy.
The Ministry noted that Vice Admiral Swaminathan was instrumental in establishing the Indian Naval Safety Team, an important initiative responsible for ensuring operational safety across all branches of naval operations. He later headed the Navy’s Work Up Organisation as Flag Officer Sea Training before being appointed Flag Officer Commanding the Western Fleet, one of the Navy’s most operationally critical formations.
After commanding the Western Fleet, often referred to as the “Sword Arm” of the Indian Navy, he was appointed Flag Officer Offshore Defence Advisory Group and Adviser on Offshore Security and Defence to the Government of India.
On his elevation to the rank of Vice Admiral, he held several senior positions, including Chief of Staff of the Western Naval Command, Controller of Personnel Services and Chief of Personnel at Naval Headquarters. Prior to his current assignment, he served as Vice Chief of the Naval Staff.
Apart from his extensive military experience, Vice Admiral Swaminathan also possesses a strong academic background. His educational qualifications include a Bachelor of Science degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi and a Master of Science in Telecommunications from Cochin University of Science and Technology in Kochi.
He also holds a Master’s degree in Defence Studies from King’s College London, an M.Phil in Strategic Studies from University of Mumbai and a PhD in International Studies from the same university.
For his distinguished contribution to the Navy and national security, Vice Admiral Swaminathan has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM).
His appointment comes as India continues to focus on maritime modernisation, indigenisation of defence systems and strengthening naval preparedness amid evolving regional and global security challenges.
