Delhi Capitals Opt to Bowl Against Punjab Kings in Must-Win IPL 2026 Clash

Dharamsala, May 2026 : Delhi Capitals won the toss and elected to field first against Punjab Kings in Match 55 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on Monday.

The contest holds immense significance for Delhi Capitals, whose playoff hopes are hanging by a thread. Following the elimination of Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians on Sunday, Delhi remain mathematically alive in the race but need victories in all remaining matches to stay in contention. The Axar Patel-led side currently sits eighth on the points table with eight points from 11 matches, and another defeat would officially end its campaign.

Punjab Kings, on the other hand, are looking to regain momentum after suffering three consecutive defeats. Despite the recent slump, PBKS remain firmly placed in the playoff race, having won six of their first seven matches earlier in the season. A win against Delhi could lift them back to the top half of the standings and strengthen their qualification prospects.

After winning the toss, Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel attempted to maintain a positive atmosphere within the squad. He joked that at least one thing was going right for him this season — winning tosses. Axar said the team had not played poor cricket overall but admitted that they had repeatedly failed to capitalise on crucial moments during matches.

He stressed that the Capitals would continue backing their aggressive style of cricket and focus on delivering strong performances without worrying excessively about outcomes.

Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer echoed a similar sentiment, saying that the team should not overthink the points table and instead focus on executing small details correctly. He admitted Punjab had lacked belief in key moments during the last few matches and said backing instincts was critical in a long tournament like the IPL.

Shreyas also confirmed that Australian pacer Ben Dwarshuis replaced Lockie Ferguson, who was unavailable due to a slight niggle. Punjab Kings made two changes overall, bringing in Priyansh Arya and Dwarshuis in place of Vyshak Vijaykumar and Ferguson.

Delhi Capitals made as many as five changes to their playing XI. Abishek Porel, Sahil Parakh, David Miller, Madhav Tiwari and Auqib Nabi were drafted into the side, replacing Sameer Rizvi, Nitish Rana, Pathum Nissanka, Ashutosh Sharma and Vipraj Nigam.

The picturesque Dharamsala venue, known for assisting seam bowlers under lights, is expected to provide another exciting contest with both teams desperate for points at this crucial stage of the tournament.
