Himanta Biswa Sarma Takes Oath as Assam Chief Minister for Second Consecutive Term
Guwahati, May 2026 : Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday took oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term as the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) returned to power in the state for the third straight time following a decisive victory in the Assembly elections.
Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Sarma at a grand swearing-in ceremony held at the Veterinary College ground in Khanapara, Guwahati, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several senior BJP and NDA leaders.
Along with Sarma, five Ministers were sworn in as members of the new Council of Ministers. Former Union Minister Rameswar Teli, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) President Atul Bora, United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) leader Charan Boro and senior BJP leader Ajanta Neog were among those inducted into the Cabinet.
The ceremony witnessed the presence of several top leaders of the NDA government, including Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Chief Ministers and senior representatives from 22 NDA-ruled states also attended the event, highlighting the political significance of the occasion.
Several prominent religious figures, including 15 Satradhikars from Assam’s Vaishnavite monasteries, were present at the ceremony. Leading industrialists, business representatives and distinguished personalities from various sectors also attended the swearing-in function.
Sarma, dressed in traditional Assamese attire, took the oath amid loud cheers from party workers and supporters gathered at the venue. The atmosphere at Khanapara turned celebratory as BJP workers waved party flags and raised slogans in support of the NDA leadership.
The BJP leader returned to power after the NDA secured a comfortable majority in the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections. The victory further strengthened the BJP’s hold over Assam and reinforced its political dominance in the northeastern region.
This marks Sarma’s second consecutive term as Chief Minister after he first assumed office in 2021. Under his leadership, the BJP has achieved a major political milestone by forming the government in Assam for a third straight term, something unprecedented in the state’s recent political history.
Earlier, Sarma was unanimously elected leader of the BJP Legislature Party and the NDA Legislature Party in Assam during a meeting of newly elected legislators. Following his election as leader, he met Governor Acharya and formally staked claim to form the government.
Political observers view the NDA’s renewed mandate as an endorsement of Sarma’s leadership and the government’s development-focused agenda over the past five years. The new administration is expected to focus on infrastructure development, employment generation, welfare initiatives and strengthening connectivity in the northeastern state.
The first Cabinet meeting of the new government is expected to be held shortly, where key policy decisions and priorities for the new term are likely to be discussed.
