Centre Extends Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary G. Sai Prasad’s Tenure by Six Months
Amaravati, May 2026 : The Central Government has approved a six-month extension in the tenure of Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary G. Sai Prasad, allowing the senior IAS officer to continue in office until November 30, 2026.
The extension, which comes into effect from June 1, was granted following a formal request made by the Andhra Pradesh Government seeking continuation of his services beyond his scheduled retirement at the end of May.
The decision was communicated through an official letter issued by the Union Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions under the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). Rajesh Kumar Yadav, Under Secretary in the Ministry, informed the Principal Secretary of Andhra Pradesh’s General Administration Department regarding the approval of the extension under Rule 16(1) of the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958.
The Andhra Pradesh Government had reportedly urged the Centre to retain Sai Prasad in view of his administrative experience and ongoing responsibilities connected to key state projects and governance initiatives.
Sai Prasad took charge as the Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh on February 28, 2026, succeeding K. Vijayanand, who retired from service after receiving a three-month extension from the state government. Before assuming the top bureaucratic position in the state, Sai Prasad was serving as the Special Chief Secretary in the Water Resources Department.
A 1991-batch IAS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, Sai Prasad has held several important administrative positions during his long career in public service. He began his career as Assistant Collector in Warangal in the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh between 1992 and 1993.
Over the years, he has served in multiple departments and earned a reputation for his administrative expertise and policy implementation capabilities. Among the key assignments handled by him was his tenure as Chief Commissioner of Land Administration (CCLA), where he oversaw critical land governance and revenue administration matters.
Sai Prasad, who holds an M.Tech degree, is regarded as a technically qualified bureaucrat with extensive experience in infrastructure, water resources, and administrative reforms.
Officials in the state administration believe that the extension will ensure continuity in governance and help accelerate ongoing developmental and infrastructure projects being pursued by the Andhra Pradesh Government.
The decision also reflects the Centre’s approval of the state government’s recommendation to retain experienced officers in crucial administrative roles during an important phase of policy execution and institutional reforms.
With the extension now formally approved, Sai Prasad will continue to head the state bureaucracy for another six months, overseeing governance, coordination among departments, and implementation of major state initiatives.
