‘Khet Talaab Yojana’ promoting water conservation, farmers getting additional sources of income along with irrigation benefits
Lucknow, May 2026 : Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh Government is continuously implementing ambitious schemes to increase farmers’ income and make agriculture more profitable. The government’s objective is that farmers should not remain merely food producers, but also become prosperous and self-reliant entrepreneurs. Along with this, the Yogi Government is not limiting farmers only to farming, but is also connecting them with modern technology, water conservation, irrigation facilities and additional sources of income.
In this sequence, the ‘Khet Talaab Yojana’ is proving extremely beneficial for farmers. The scheme is being considered an important step towards water conservation and increasing agricultural production.
The main objective of the ‘Khet Talaab Yojana’, being operated under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana, is to provide farmers with a permanent irrigation facility by conserving rainwater. At present, groundwater levels are continuously declining, and in such a situation the Khet Talaab Yojana is proving to be a boon for farmers. The ponds constructed in fields conserve rainwater, ensuring water availability for irrigation even during drought conditions.
Under this scheme, a pond of 22 meter × 20 meter × 3 meter size is constructed. The total cost has been fixed at ₹1,05,000, out of which the government provides a subsidy of ₹52,500. This means the government is bearing half of the cost for farmers. Due to this, small and marginal farmers are also able to avail the benefits of the scheme easily.
This scheme is not limited only to irrigation, but is also providing farmers with new opportunities for additional income. In the farm ponds, farmers can undertake fish farming, pearl cultivation, water chestnut production and other aquatic farming activities. This is creating multiple sources of income for farmers.
The state government is also promoting modern irrigation systems. Under the scheme, subsidies ranging from 80 to 90 percent are being provided on sprinkler sets. Similarly, assistance of up to ₹15,000 or 50 percent is being provided on pump sets. This is reducing irrigation costs for farmers and ensuring better utilization of water resources.
The government has ensured complete transparency in this scheme. Farmers will be selected through the online portal on the basis of booking under the “first come, first served” principle. This has eliminated the possibility of any recommendation or corruption and is ensuring direct benefits to eligible farmers. Farmers no longer need to visit government offices repeatedly, as they are receiving facilities through the digital system.
Land Conservation Officer of Kanpur Nagar, R.P. Kushwaha, stated that the state government is paying special attention to making agriculture self-reliant and technology-driven. Making farming secure through water conservation, connecting farmers with modern irrigation systems and promoting activities such as fish farming along with agriculture reflect the government’s visionary policy.
Today, thousands of farmers across the state are increasing their income by availing the benefits of this scheme. Construction of farm ponds is increasing crop productivity and reducing farmers’ dependence on weather conditions.
Subsidy will be provided in two phases:
- First instalment: After completion of pond excavation work.
- Second instalment: After installation of the water inlet system and display board.
- Required documents: Farmer Registry is mandatory for application.
- Token money: A token amount of ₹1000 has to be deposited along with the online application, which will be refunded.
- Website: Interested farmers can make online bookings through the Agriculture Department’s portal Agri Darshan.
- Timeline: Verification will be completed within 15 days of booking and the pond must be completed within 30 days.
