State Government Vigilant About Preservation of Ancient Heritage in Navagarh

Culture Minister Rajesh Agrawal Orders Survey and Detailed Investigation

Expert Team to Conduct Site Inspection; Conservation and Security Measures to Begin Based on Findings

Raipur, May 2026 : Reaffirming the state government’s commitment to preserving Chhattisgarh’s historical and cultural heritage, Culture Minister Rajesh Agrawal has taken swift cognisance of the discovery of ancient archaeological remains in the Navagarh area of Kondagaon district.

Minister Agrawal has directed the Directorate of Archaeology, Archives and Museums to conduct an immediate site inspection and detailed survey of the ancient idols and other archaeological remains found in the Navagarh region through a team of experts.

The minister said that after information surfaced regarding ancient sculptures and archaeological remains believed to date back to the 5th and 6th centuries AD, a scientific study of the site had become extremely important. He instructed officials to ensure that the expert team carries out a detailed examination of all sculptures, architectural remains, artistic artefacts, and potential archaeological locations in the area. He also directed that comprehensive documentation be prepared so that the historical significance of the heritage can be properly assessed.

Agrawal stated that based on the report submitted after the survey and site inspection, necessary steps would be initiated for the conservation, preservation, and security of the archaeological remains. He added that if the site’s historical importance is confirmed, efforts would also be made to develop it as a protected archaeological site.

The minister said that the land of Chhattisgarh has long been enriched with ancient civilisations, architectural excellence, and vibrant cultural traditions. He noted that several important sites across the state require systematic study and preservation. The state government, he said, is continuously working towards identifying, protecting, and scientifically studying such heritage assets.

Agrawal further emphasised that the participation of local public representatives, researchers, historians, and citizens is crucial for preserving the state’s historical heritage. He said that conservation of these sites is not merely an effort to protect the past, but also an important means of connecting future generations with their cultural roots and history.

He added that the state government aims not only to preserve historical sites and archaeological heritage but also to develop them from the perspectives of research, academic study, and cultural tourism. Such initiatives, he said, would help bring wider recognition to Chhattisgarh’s rich cultural legacy while also creating new opportunities for tourism and employment at the local level.
