Romania: No Correction Has Yet Been Invented Without Disturbing Someone, Said Bolojan.

Bucharest; May 2026: Yesterday (Friday – 22nd May 2026; late night IST) PNL President Ilie Bolojan have said that one of the mistakes the PNL made was creating large coalitions, which did not correct past mistakes. “No correction has yet been invented, anywhere, without disturbing someone, and in the end, if you don’t want to disturb anyone, you end up disturbing everyone, because you won’t get anything done”, Bolojan said in this context, conveying to the liberals that they should not repeat a ‘mistake’ like ‘the coalition to be in government’.

Bolojan further reiterated, “I think that we, through rhetoric, through the decisions we made, on the one hand, have contributed to the formation of these perceptions, sometimes, and we have contributed to the perception of distrust and to the situation we reached last year, to the large deficits that Romania had and to everything that happened. And in terms of what we should do, however, 151 years after the founding of this party in order to remain a relevant party for Romania, I think there are a few things that we should not repeat, which I also consider to have been some errors that we made in the past years”.

He has cited an example in this regard, the creation of expectations by parties among the electorate, which could not be honoured, saying that rhetoric like ‘if you vote for us, we will make you rich, you will not need to make any effort for this’ created the wave of anti-system votes from many citizens.

“We don’t have to use this rhetoric anymore, and although many times in this 10-month government I went against the grain, I always sought to tell people the real situation. I think that the PNL must have correct rhetoric, to tell citizens, voters the truth, because it is the first condition to make them aware of the situation we are in and only in this way can steps be taken to rebuild trust and hope that things can look different”, Bolojan asserted.

The PNL President emphasised that another error was the creation of “large coalitions only for positions, for so-called stability, for peace. When you form a 60% coalition, when you bring the left and the right into a coalition, it would be assumed that you have to do something serious, to come and intervene on the problems that the governments have generated in the past years, to correct them. Unfortunately, I did not do this. However, if I had a Prime Minister, I would have personally gone and say: correct there, in these areas, try!”

Bolojan continued, “They get upset, it’s a nuisance, you realise that no correction has yet been invented, anywhere, without bothering anyone and, in the end, if you don’t want to bother anyone, you end up bothering everyone, because you won’t do anything and that’s what I did. And then think that the vote against went to an area that was selling illusions. That was a second big mistake and we shouldn’t repeat such a mistake, just the coalition to be in government which, how can I tell you, several colleagues were in positions. A few sent people to boards of directors, but other than that we didn’t manage to profoundly change the problems we had”, added the PNL leader.

He also described as an error the fact that political parties had tolerated the transformation of public institutions in which those who were appointed or elected to leadership positions behaved on a feudal model, in which the institution belongs to the one who is elected or appointed there.

“Again, accepting this situation, we have reached a situation where hostility towards the political world has been raised to high levels and it was seen in 2024, in 2025 that practically the parties that defined themselves as system parties have simply been swept away. If we do not keep up with these realities, if we do not communicate as correctly as possible with the people, if we do not tell them the truth, if we do not separate the waters in such a way that it is clear that the PNL does not repeat the mistakes it made and if we do not rebuild the party, making it stronger, more professional, more correct in addressing, having a plan, if we do not do these things, the probability of us reaching a situation of achieving the maximum possible in 2028, for Romania, first of all, and then for us, will be greatly reduced”, Ilie Bolojan also stated.
