Tamil Nadu’s Expanded Free Power Scheme to Roll Out From Next Billing Cycle
Chennai, May 2026 : The Tamil Nadu government’s expanded free electricity scheme for domestic consumers will come into effect from the next billing cycle after the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) completes the required updates to its billing software.
The revised scheme is expected to benefit millions of households across the state and substantially increase the number of consumers receiving zero electricity bills.
According to an official communication issued by the accounts branch of Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited to field-level chief engineers, the billing software has already been updated to incorporate eligibility checks, subsidy calculations, bill generation and accounting provisions required for implementing the revised policy.
Senior TNPDCL officials have also directed field staff to familiarise themselves with the new system and ensure smooth implementation so that eligible consumers can avail of the benefits without delays once the next billing cycle begins.
The expansion of the free power scheme is among the first major welfare initiatives announced by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay after assuming office.
Under the revised policy, domestic consumers whose bi-monthly electricity consumption does not exceed 500 units will now receive free electricity for up to 200 units. Earlier, the free electricity benefit was limited to 100 units.
Tamil Nadu currently has around 2.46 crore domestic electricity consumers. Of these, nearly 67 lakh households consuming less than 100 units every two months already receive complete exemption from electricity charges.
With the free power limit now extended to 200 units, officials estimate that the number of households receiving zero electricity bills will increase significantly to nearly 1.2 crore consumers across the state.
The revised subsidy structure is also expected to provide partial relief to another 85.83 lakh consumers, who are likely to see a reduction of approximately Rs 235 in their electricity bills every two months from the upcoming billing cycle onwards.
However, consumers whose electricity usage exceeds 500 units per billing cycle will continue to receive only the existing benefit of 100 free units. According to officials, around 34.24 lakh consumers fall under this category.
Officials stated that the process of upgrading the billing software began immediately after the government announced the policy revision on May 10. The aim was to ensure that the new subsidy structure could be implemented seamlessly without disrupting billing operations.
The expanded free electricity scheme is being viewed as a major welfare measure intended to reduce the financial burden on lower- and middle-income families amid rising household expenses.
TNPDCL officials clarified that the initiative is part of a broader government welfare policy and that the Tamil Nadu government will bear the additional financial burden resulting from the expansion of the subsidy programme.
The rollout of the revised scheme is expected to provide substantial financial relief to households while strengthening the government’s social welfare agenda aimed at supporting domestic consumers across the state.
