Trump Says US, Iran Near Broad Peace Understanding After Talks With Regional Leaders
Washington, May 2026 : US President Donald Trump has claimed that the United States and Iran are close to finalising a broad peace understanding following a series of high-level discussions with leaders from the Middle East and South Asia, including Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir and top Gulf leaders.
In a post shared on Truth Social on Saturday, Trump said a major agreement had been “largely negotiated” between Washington, Tehran and several regional countries, with only the final details remaining to be settled.
According to Trump, the discussions focused on regional peace, security and a proposed memorandum of understanding related to stabilising tensions involving Iran.
“I am in the Oval Office at the White House where we just had a very good call,” Trump wrote, listing several leaders who participated in the discussions. These included Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.
Trump also mentioned Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir Ahmed Shah among the participants in the discussions concerning Iran and broader regional peace efforts.
Describing the diplomatic engagement as productive, Trump said the agreement had already been substantially worked out.
“An Agreement has been largely negotiated, subject to finalisation between the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the various other countries, as listed,” he stated.
The US President further revealed that he separately held talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and described that conversation as positive as well.
“Separately, I had a call with Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu of Israel, which, likewise, went very well,” Trump wrote.
While Trump did not provide detailed information about the proposed agreement, he said negotiations were currently focused on finalising the remaining aspects of the understanding and that an official announcement could come soon.
“Final aspects and details of the Deal are currently being discussed, and will be announced shortly,” he added.
One of the most notable elements of Trump’s statement concerned the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes. The narrow waterway handles a significant share of global oil shipments and has frequently been at the centre of tensions involving Iran and Western powers.
“In addition to many other elements of the Agreement, the Strait of Hormuz will be opened,” Trump stated, without elaborating further.
The comments are expected to draw significant international attention, especially from countries heavily dependent on Gulf energy supplies, including India. Any easing of tensions around the Strait of Hormuz could help stabilise global oil prices, reduce concerns over supply disruptions and improve shipping security in the region.
The proposed understanding, if finalised, could mark a major diplomatic development amid years of strained relations between the United States and Iran over regional security, sanctions and nuclear issues.
However, neither the White House nor officials from the countries mentioned in Trump’s statement immediately released further details regarding the proposed memorandum or the specific commitments involved.
The absence of official clarification has left several questions unanswered, including the exact framework of the agreement and the role individual regional powers would play in its implementation.
Still, Trump’s announcement signals renewed diplomatic momentum in a region that has witnessed prolonged instability and geopolitical tensions in recent years.
