Shreyas Iyer’s Maiden IPL Century Keeps Punjab Kings’ Playoff Hopes Alive with Seven-Wicket Win Over LSG

Lucknow, May 2026 : Captain Shreyas Iyer produced a sensational unbeaten century to guide Punjab Kings to a commanding seven-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants in a crucial IPL 2026 clash at the BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium on Saturday, keeping his team’s playoff hopes alive.

Chasing a challenging target of 197, Punjab Kings reached 200/3 in just 18 overs, ending a six-match losing streak in emphatic fashion. Iyer remained unbeaten on a magnificent 101 off 51 balls, registering his maiden Indian Premier League century in style. His match-winning knock included 11 fours and five towering sixes and came at an impressive strike rate of 198.04.

The Punjab skipper played with remarkable authority, mixing elegant stroke play with aggressive intent. His innings was highlighted by sublime timing, powerful bottom-handed shots and excellent placement all around the ground.

Iyer found excellent support from opener Prabhsimran Singh, who played a blazing knock of 69 off 39 deliveries. The duo stitched together a massive 140-run partnership that completely shifted the momentum in Punjab’s favour after an early wobble.

Punjab’s chase got off to the worst possible start when Priyansh Arya was dismissed for a golden duck on the very first ball of the innings by Mohammed Shami. The pacer struck again shortly after, bowling Cooper Connolly for a quick 18 as PBKS slipped to 22/2 in 2.2 overs.

However, Iyer and Prabhsimran steadied the innings with a mix of caution and calculated aggression. Iyer quickly settled in, driving and cutting confidently, while Prabhsimran counterattacked with innovative stroke play and fearless hitting.

The partnership flourished after the powerplay. Prabhsimran, who survived a chance on 20 when Rishabh Pant dropped him off Arjun Tendulkar, made full use of the reprieve and raced to his half-century in just 28 balls.

At the other end, Iyer continued to dominate the bowlers and reached his fifty in 33 deliveries. The Punjab captain accelerated brilliantly in the latter stages of the innings, particularly targeting Mohammed Shami, whom he smashed for three sixes in a single over to virtually seal the contest.

Prabhsimran was eventually trapped lbw by Arjun Tendulkar after his entertaining 69-run knock, but by then Punjab were firmly in control.

Fittingly, Iyer completed his century with a towering six over cow corner off Mohsin Khan, sparking celebrations in the Punjab camp. Removing his helmet and raising his bat to acknowledge the crowd, Iyer looked visibly emotional as teammates rushed onto the field to congratulate him.

Earlier, Lucknow Super Giants posted 196/6 in their 20 overs, courtesy of Josh Inglis’ impressive 72 and Ayush Badoni’s brisk 43. Abdul Samad also contributed valuable runs in the death overs to push the total close to 200.

For Punjab Kings, Yuzvendra Chahal delivered an economical spell of 2/25, while Marco Jansen claimed 2/33.

The victory lifted Punjab Kings to fourth place in the points table, although their qualification hopes still depend on other results. Punjab now await the outcome of Rajasthan Royals’ clash against Mumbai Indians. A Rajasthan victory would eliminate PBKS, while a Mumbai win could still open the door for Kolkata Knight Riders to overtake Punjab on net run rate.

If results go in their favour, Punjab Kings will face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator in New Chandigarh on Wednesday.

For Lucknow Super Giants, the defeat marked their tenth loss of the season and confirmed a bottom-place finish in the IPL 2026 standings.

Brief Scores:

Lucknow Super Giants: 196/6 in 20 overs (Josh Inglis 72, Ayush Badoni 43; Yuzvendra Chahal 2/25, Marco Jansen 2/33)

Punjab Kings: 200/3 in 18 overs (Shreyas Iyer 101 not out, Prabhsimran Singh 69; Mohammed Shami 2/45, Arjun Tendulkar 1/36)
