Fragrance of MP’s Bangla ‘Paan’ Reaches Neighbouring Countries

Bhopal, May 2026 : Under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, sustained efforts are being made to promote farmer welfare in Madhya Pradesh, and these initiatives are yielding encouraging results. Today, the state’s ‘Betel Leaf’ (Paan) is gaining popularity not only across India but also in neighbouring countries due to its distinctive aroma, tenderness and flavour.

‘Paan’cultivation has been practised for generations in districts such as Chhatarpur, Rewa, Mandsaur, Narsinghpur and Tikamgarh, and is emerging as a significant source of livelihood and income for farmers. Chhatarpur’s renowned ‘Bangla Paan’ is particularly known for its superior quality and enjoys growing demand in neighbouring countries, including Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

To encourage ‘Paan’cultivation, the Madhya Pradesh Government has implemented a special action plan covering 10 districts, with a budget provision of ₹1.03 crore. Farmers are being provided training, modern cultivation techniques, improved planting material and assistance in the construction of Barejas.

The Bangla Paan grown in Chhatarpur is considered highly suitable for export due to its delicate texture, mild sweetness and long-lasting freshness. Similarly, betel leaves produced in two villages of the Mahsaon area in Rewa district have developed a distinct identity. Large quantities are supplied to major cities of Uttar Pradesh, including Varanasi, Prayagraj and Lucknow, where they are highly preferred by consumers.

In Madhya Pradesh, ‘Paan’cultivation has traditionally been carried out by the Chaurasia community. Generations of cultivators have been engaged in this traditional occupation, producing high-quality betel leaves through their expertise and inherited knowledge. ‘Paan’cultivation is undertaken in specially designed protected structures known as barojs, where temperature and humidity are carefully regulated to ensure optimum plant growth. Although the process is labour-intensive, it results in superior-quality produce.

At present, ‘Paan’growers face several challenges. The growing popularity of products such as pan masala and gutkha has impacted the demand for traditional betel leaves. A growing inclination among younger consumers towards these products has led to a decline in consumption, impacting farmers’ incomes. Nevertheless, the cultural and religious significance of traditional betel leaves continues to sustain stable demand.

‘Paan’holds a special place in Indian culture. It is not only associated with taste and freshness but is also widely used in religious rituals, wedding ceremonies and traditional hospitality. This cultural importance continues to preserve its relevance in contemporary society.

Madhya Pradesh’s ‘Paan’is steadily establishing its identity in both domestic and international markets. With adequate encouragement, improved marketing support and greater awareness, this sector has the potential to make a significant contribution to strengthening the state’s economy while enhancing farmers’ livelihoods.
