Harbhajan Singh Meets Amit Shah, Seeks Greater Central Support for Punjab’s Development

New Delhi, May 2026 : Former Indian cricketer and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Saturday and held discussions on a range of issues concerning Punjab, including development, public welfare, and law and order.

Sharing details of the meeting on social media platform X, Harbhajan Singh said the interaction focused on matters of significant importance to the state and its people. He noted that the discussions covered strategies for strengthening governance, improving public welfare initiatives, and ensuring better law-and-order conditions across Punjab.

“Today, I met the Hon’ble Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah ji in New Delhi. We had an extensive discussion on key issues related to Punjab, including the state’s development, public welfare, and further strengthening law and order,” Harbhajan Singh stated.

The BJP MP also said he urged the Central Government to extend continued support for safeguarding Punjab’s interests and accelerating its development agenda. He emphasized the need for cooperation between the Centre and the state to address challenges and create new opportunities for growth and prosperity.

The meeting assumes political significance as it comes just weeks after Harbhajan Singh switched allegiance from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to the BJP. The former off-spinner was among seven Rajya Sabha MPs who left AAP and joined the BJP in a major political development that reshaped the balance of power in the Upper House.

The group of leaders who crossed over included prominent parliamentarians such as Raghav Chadha, Swati Maliwal, Ashok Mittal, Sandeep Pathak, Vikram Sahney, and Rajinder Gupta. Their departure significantly reduced AAP’s strength in the Rajya Sabha and was viewed as a major setback for the party.

Before joining the BJP, Harbhajan Singh had frequently voiced concerns about governance issues in Punjab. In an earlier social media post, he alleged that the state had suffered due to poor administration and corruption, remarks that drew considerable political attention.

The recent political realignment has also intensified the confrontation between the BJP and the AAP-led Punjab government. Soon after joining the BJP, Raghav Chadha met Droupadi Murmu and raised concerns regarding the alleged misuse of government machinery by the Punjab administration.

Chadha accused the state government of engaging in political vendetta by allegedly using police and administrative resources against MPs who had left AAP and joined the BJP.

Against this backdrop, Harbhajan Singh’s meeting with Amit Shah is being viewed as part of the BJP’s broader efforts to strengthen its political presence in Punjab while highlighting issues related to governance, security, and development in the border state.
