Rekha Government’s Major Farmer-Friendly Decision: Compensation of ₹75,000 per Hectare for Crop Loss

Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta approves relief for farmers affected by rainfall during August-September 2025

Major revision made to the earlier rate of ₹20,000 per acre in force since 2015

Way cleared for disbursement of enhanced ex-gratia assistance of ₹33.32 crore to around 10,000 farmers

New Delhi, June 2026 : The Delhi Government has decided to significantly enhance the ex-gratia assistance provided for crop loss, bringing major relief to farmers. According to Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta, approval has been granted to provide ex-gratia assistance at the rate of ₹75,000 per hectare to farmers affected by heavy rainfall and waterlogging in agricultural fields during August-September 2025.

The decision was taken in a Cabinet meeting. The Chief Minister said that the government’s decision will directly benefit around 10,000 farmers in the capital whose crops were severely affected due to continuous heavy rainfall last year and waterlogging in fields caused by the overflowing of natural drains. She stated that a total agricultural area of 10,977.44 acres (approximately 4,442.41 hectares) was affected in Delhi.

According to the Chief Minister, in 2015 the then government had made a provision to provide ex-gratia assistance at the rate of ₹20,000 per acre in cases of crop loss due to rainfall. This amount is approximately ₹49,421 per hectare. Now, keeping in view the increase in agricultural costs over a period of more than ten years, the present government has increased the rate of assistance to ₹75,000 per hectare. As a result, farmers will receive significantly higher assistance than before. This assistance will be provided to farmers whose crops were damaged due to heavy rainfall and the resulting waterlogging in agricultural fields. The present decision has been taken specifically in the context of the circumstances arising from excessive rainfall during August-September 2025 and the disruption of the natural drainage system.

According to the Chief Minister, this assistance will be provided to recorded landowners. Land owned by companies, land vested in Gram Sabhas, and farmhouse plots enclosed by permanent boundary walls will not be covered under this assistance. She said that a detailed assessment conducted by the Revenue Department found that crops suffered extensive damage in areas affected by heavy rainfall and waterlogging during August-September 2025, and crop loss was assessed at 100 percent. In view of this, the Cabinet has decided to provide ex-gratia assistance at the full rate of ₹75,000 per hectare to affected farmers. Under the earlier arrangement, assistance was provided in proportion to crop loss up to 70 percent, while full assistance was payable when crop loss exceeded 70 percent.

Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta said that the Delhi Government accords the highest priority to farmers’ hard work, livelihood and agricultural security. When crops are affected due to natural disasters, excessive rainfall or other adverse circumstances, it is the responsibility of the government to stand firmly with farmers and provide them timely financial assistance. The Chief Minister said that under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, the Central Government is working with the resolve to increase farmers’ income, make agriculture more remunerative and provide a safety net to farmers during times of crisis. Carrying forward the same vision and commitment, the Delhi Government has taken this important decision to provide relief to farmers affected by crop loss. She said that this assistance will not only provide financial support to farmers but will also enable them to prepare for the next crop and ensure continuity of agricultural activities.
