Thirumavalavan Rules Out Tiruchirappalli East Bypoll, Rejects Ministerial Speculation
Chennai, June 2026 : Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol Thirumavalavan on Tuesday firmly dismissed speculation surrounding the upcoming Tiruchirappalli East Assembly by-election, announcing that he would not contest the seat vacated by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay after assuming office.
In a video statement, the veteran Dalit leader made it clear that he had taken a conscious decision to stay away from all by-elections and had no interest in seeking legislative office or ministerial positions through such electoral opportunities during the tenure of the current government.
His clarification comes amid growing political speculation that he could be fielded as the ruling alliance candidate in the Tiruchirappalli East bypoll and subsequently inducted into the state Cabinet if elected. The rumours had gained traction in recent weeks, with political observers viewing the move as a possibility given the VCK’s support for the government.
Addressing the issue directly, Thirumavalavan revealed that discussions had indeed taken place regarding his candidature. He acknowledged that he had been approached about contesting the by-election and that the possibility of a ministerial berth had also been mentioned. However, he said he politely declined the proposal.
“I have already conveyed my decision and expressed my gratitude to the Chief Minister for the confidence reposed in me. My position is very clear. I will not contest this by-election, nor will I participate in any future by-elections,” he said.
The VCK chief emphasized that his commitment to public service, social justice and political activism does not depend on holding elected office. According to him, meaningful contributions to society and governance can be made from outside legislative institutions as well.
Thirumavalavan also sought to explain the circumstances that led to the VCK extending support to the ruling alliance following the Assembly elections. Along with the Left parties and the Indian Union Muslim League, the VCK backed the TVK-led government during the post-election political realignment, while the Congress entered into a separate arrangement with the alliance.
He stated that the decision was taken after consultations with M.K. Stalin and other political allies. According to him, the move was guided by broader political considerations and aimed at ensuring stability in Tamil Nadu during a crucial period.
The VCK leader said the support extended to the government was intended to prevent political uncertainty and avoid the possibility of President’s Rule in the state. He added that political realities had changed significantly after the elections, requiring parties to adopt a more pragmatic approach focused on governance and stability.
Reflecting on his criticism of Vijay during the election campaign, Thirumavalavan noted that electoral contests and post-election responsibilities are different phases of politics. He said alliance commitments now require parties to work together in the larger interest of the state.
Reiterating that his decision was final, Thirumavalavan urged party workers and supporters not to pay heed to rumours regarding his participation in any future by-elections, stating that he remains committed to serving the people through political and social movements rather than electoral office.
