D.K. Shivakumar Sworn In as Karnataka Chief Minister, Ushering in New Phase of Governance

Bengaluru, June 2026 : Karnataka witnessed a major political transition on Wednesday as D.K. Shivakumar took oath as the state’s new Chief Minister at a grand ceremony held at the Glass House in Lok Bhavan, Bengaluru. The swearing-in ceremony, which began at 4 p.m., marked the start of a new Congress-led government and was attended by senior political leaders, legislators, party workers, government officials, and invited dignitaries from various sectors.

The event was conducted amid elaborate security arrangements and extensive traffic management measures put in place by the state administration. The venue witnessed a large gathering of supporters and well-wishers who celebrated Shivakumar’s elevation to the top post in the state.

Ahead of the ceremony, senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi conveyed her congratulations to Shivakumar and extended her best wishes for his tenure. According to party sources, she advised him to take all sections of society along and ensure balanced decision-making aimed at the overall development of Karnataka. She also expressed confidence that he would successfully discharge his responsibilities and provide strong leadership to the state.

Along with Shivakumar, 13 ministers were sworn into the cabinet during the first phase of government formation. The newly inducted ministers include several experienced legislators and senior Congress leaders who are expected to head key departments in the administration. Veteran Congress leader G. Parameshwara took oath as the Deputy Chief Minister, adding considerable administrative experience to the new government.

The cabinet formation reflects the Congress party’s effort to strike a balance between seniority, regional representation, caste equations, and administrative expertise. Political observers believe the leadership structure has been carefully designed to ensure stability and unity within the party while addressing the aspirations of various communities across the state.

Speaking after taking the oath, Chief Minister Shivakumar outlined his vision for Karnataka and identified development, education, healthcare, infrastructure, employment generation, and social welfare as the government’s primary focus areas. He pledged to strengthen governance mechanisms and ensure transparency and accountability in every department.

Shivakumar also stressed the importance of inclusive governance and constructive political engagement. He stated that his government would work for the benefit of all sections of society and maintain a positive dialogue with opposition parties to address issues concerning the people of Karnataka.

“This government belongs to every citizen of Karnataka. Our focus will be on development, efficient administration, and creating opportunities for the youth. We will work with dedication to meet the aspirations of the people,” he said.

Political analysts view Shivakumar’s appointment as a significant strategic move by the Congress leadership. Having played a crucial role in strengthening the party organisation over the years, his elevation is expected to help consolidate the party’s position in Karnataka while preparing it for future electoral challenges.

Across the state, Congress workers celebrated the occasion with enthusiasm, organising gatherings and expressing hope that the new leadership would accelerate development initiatives and improve governance. Many supporters described the swearing-in as the beginning of a fresh political chapter that could bring renewed energy to the state administration.

Public expectations from the new government remain high, particularly in areas such as infrastructure development, job creation, agricultural support, education reforms, and welfare programmes. As the Shivakumar-led administration begins its tenure, attention will now shift to the allocation of portfolios and the rollout of policy initiatives.

With the new government formally taking charge, Karnataka enters a new phase of governance. The coming months will be crucial in determining how effectively the administration delivers on its promises and addresses the developmental and social challenges facing the state. Citizens will be closely watching whether the new leadership can translate optimism and political goodwill into tangible progress and inclusive growth.
