Jana Sena Will Contest 2029 Telangana Elections, Says Pawan Kalyan; Slams Threats and Defends Free Movement

Hyderabad, June 2: Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Jana Sena Party chief Pawan Kalyan on Tuesday asserted that his party will continue its presence in Telangana and will contest the 2029 Assembly elections in the state. He also strongly dismissed threats made against him, declaring that no individual or group could restrict his movement within the country.

Speaking at a press conference held outside his Jubilee Hills residence in Hyderabad, Pawan Kalyan said he would not be intimidated by warnings issued by certain political groups. His remarks came after the Cyberabad Police denied permission for Jana Sena to hold a public meeting in the city, citing concerns over potential law and order disturbances.

Despite the restrictions, a large number of Jana Sena supporters gathered near his residence. Police had deployed barricades and imposed traffic diversions in the area as a precautionary measure to prevent any untoward incident.

Reaffirming his party’s long-term political plans, Pawan Kalyan declared, “Jana Sena will definitely contest the 2029 Telangana Assembly elections.” However, he clarified that decisions regarding alliances and electoral strategy would be taken closer to the polls. At the same time, he stated that he currently has no intention of personally contesting from Telangana.

Calling for a constructive political discourse, the Jana Sena leader urged all stakeholders to focus on issues such as employment, governance, and the implementation of welfare promises rather than engaging in divisive rhetoric. He specifically referred to the Telangana government’s “six guarantees” and stressed the need for accountability in their execution.

Reacting sharply to comments suggesting he would not be allowed to enter or move freely in Telangana, Pawan Kalyan questioned the legitimacy of such threats. “Is Telangana your father’s private estate? Who are you to stop me?” he asked, drawing loud applause from his supporters. He added that Telangana is an integral part of India and every citizen has the constitutional right to travel freely across states.

He further remarked, “I could not become Chief Minister in Andhra Pradesh. Will I become Chief Minister in Telangana? What is your fear?” adding that his political journey is driven not by personal ambition for power but by the desire for change.

The Jana Sena chief alleged that those issuing threats were acting out of fear that his party might influence public awareness and political discourse in Telangana. He also challenged critics to approach democratic institutions if they had concerns, stating that any attempt to obstruct him should be formally addressed in the Telangana Assembly.

Referring to allegations regarding land encroachment, Pawan Kalyan said that if any wrongdoing involving lakes or public land was proven against him, he would willingly hand it over to authorities. He also warned that legal provisions exist against those who attempt to attack him or his residence.

Emphasising constitutional rights, he said, “This is India. Do I need a passport to travel from one state to another?” and asserted that freedom of movement is a fundamental right of every citizen.

Pawan Kalyan also stated that he has never spoken against Telangana, even during previous political regimes, including that of former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao. He said he has consistently avoided conflict and has endured criticism and political attacks for over a decade without retaliating in a divisive manner.

In a broader political message, he cautioned against rising regional hostility, stating that such sentiments are more dangerous than terrorism. He emphasised that governments and people must be distinguished from one another, and warned against attempts to divide Telugu-speaking communities across states.

Citing examples, he asked whether Telugu people living in cities like Surat or Maharashtra could be asked to leave based on regional identity, calling such ideas impractical and harmful. He also referenced political developments in other states, suggesting that attempts to drive out opposition voices often backfire.

Responding to criticism from Congress leaders, Pawan Kalyan alleged inconsistency in their statements and urged senior national leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi to take note of remarks made by some of their party members.

He reiterated that Jana Sena had never opposed the formation of Telangana but had criticised the manner in which the state was bifurcated without adequate parliamentary consultation. He clarified that his respect for Telangana is rooted in long-standing cultural and emotional connections.

“I have always admired Telangana’s culture, literature, traditions, and spirit of struggle,” he said, adding that his engagement with the region predates the statehood movement itself.

Pawan Kalyan concluded by stating that his party’s approach will remain focused on democratic participation, free expression, and development-oriented politics in Telangana in the years ahead.
