Telangana Releases 91 Life Convicts on State Formation Day, Focus on Rehabilitation and Reintegration

Hyderabad, June 2026 : The Telangana Prisons and Correctional Services Department on Tuesday released 91 life convicts who were granted special remission by the state government on the occasion of Telangana Formation Day. The move is part of a broader rehabilitation effort aimed at helping former inmates rebuild their lives with dignity and become productive members of society.

Of those released, 85 are men and six are women. All beneficiaries were identified based on eligibility criteria prescribed under government remission guidelines, following assessments of their conduct, behaviour, and participation in reform-oriented activities during their incarceration.

Along with the release, the department has also introduced structured rehabilitation and employment support measures to ensure smooth reintegration of the convicts into society. Officials stated that the initiative is not limited to granting freedom, but is designed to provide long-term support for rebuilding livelihoods and restoring social dignity.

According to Soumya Mishra, Director General of the Telangana Prisons Department, employment has already been arranged for 38 of the released convicts at various fuel outlets operated by the department. These job placements are intended to offer immediate financial stability and reduce the risk of relapse into unlawful activities.

“The remaining 53 released convicts have expressed their willingness to take up self-employment, agriculture, family-run businesses, and other independent occupations. This shows their strong commitment to leading lawful and productive lives,” Mishra said.

As part of a targeted welfare initiative, four female convicts were provided sewing machines under a self-employment support scheme funded through the Prison Development Fund. Officials said this step is aimed at encouraging women’s empowerment and enabling them to earn a sustainable livelihood independently.

Mishra emphasised that the release programme represents the beginning of a new chapter in the lives of the convicts. She noted that the prison system’s role extends beyond punishment and is increasingly focused on reform, rehabilitation, and reformation of individuals.

She added that the released inmates had earned this opportunity through consistent discipline, positive conduct, and active participation in reform programmes during their stay in prison. “Every individual has the capacity to change, and the correctional system must support that transformation,” she said.

She also urged the released convicts to make full use of the opportunity provided by the government, remain law-abiding citizens, and contribute meaningfully to their families and society. She encouraged them to maintain strong family ties and act as examples of successful rehabilitation.

Highlighting ongoing reforms in the prison system, Mishra said the Telangana Prisons Department is continuously working to transform correctional facilities into centres of education, skill development, and vocational training. Various programmes including counselling sessions, employment-oriented training, and welfare schemes are being implemented to prepare inmates for life after release.

She further stated that rehabilitation does not end with release from prison. Continued post-release assistance, she said, is essential for ensuring successful reintegration into society and preventing recidivism.

Officials reiterated that the initiative reflects the government’s broader vision of combining justice with compassion, ensuring that reform remains at the core of the correctional system while promoting social reintegration and dignity for former inmates.
