Mamata, Abhishek to Attend INDIA Bloc Meeting in Delhi Amid Ongoing CID Probe

Kolkata, June 2026 : Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson Mamata Banerjee and the party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee are set to participate in the INDIA bloc meeting scheduled to be held in New Delhi on June 8, a gathering expected to focus on opposition unity and future political strategy at the national level.

The meeting assumes significance as it comes amid ongoing political developments in West Bengal and efforts by opposition parties to strengthen coordination against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Interestingly, the date of the INDIA bloc meeting coincides with the appearance sought from Abhishek Banerjee by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal Police in connection with the alleged signature mismatch case involving several Trinamool Congress legislators.

Abhishek was initially asked to appear before the CID on June 1. However, he sought additional time, citing health concerns following an incident in Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district on May 30, where he was allegedly attacked by a section of the public during a political programme.

Subsequently, CID officials issued a fresh notice directing him to appear before investigators at the agency’s headquarters at Bhabani Bhavan in South Kolkata on June 8.

Despite the ongoing investigation, Trinamool Congress leaders maintain that the party leadership will participate in the opposition gathering in the national capital as part of a broader political initiative.

According to party insiders, Mamata Banerjee had announced shortly after the West Bengal Assembly election results were declared on May 4 that she intended to intensify political engagement against the BJP not only within West Bengal but also at the national level through coordinated efforts with INDIA bloc partners.

Party leaders view the June 8 meeting as the first major step in that renewed outreach. They believe it will provide an opportunity for opposition parties to discuss common political issues, strengthen coordination and chart a collective strategy ahead of future electoral battles.

Trinamool leaders have also highlighted the support expressed by several INDIA bloc leaders following the Sonarpur incident involving Abhishek Banerjee. Messages of solidarity were publicly shared by prominent opposition figures, including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Akhilesh Yadav, Arvind Kejriwal and Hemant Soren.

Senior TMC leaders believe the upcoming INDIA bloc meeting will further reinforce opposition solidarity and provide a platform for discussing issues of national importance, while also strengthening coordination among alliance partners ahead of future political challenges.
