Varanasi Plans Relocation of Meat and Fish Shops to Preserve City’s Cultural Identity

Varanasi, June 2026 : In a significant move aimed at enhancing the cultural and religious character of Varanasi, the city’s Municipal Corporation has approved a proposal to relocate thousands of meat and fish shops from within the city limits to designated locations on the outskirts. The exercise is expected to be completed within six months and is being projected as a major step toward improving cleanliness, waste management and the overall experience of pilgrims and tourists visiting the ancient city.

Officials said the decision was taken with the objective of preserving the spiritual and cultural image of Varanasi, one of Hinduism’s holiest cities. The civic body believes that shifting meat and fish markets away from the city’s core areas will contribute to better public hygiene and support efforts to maintain the city’s religious ambience.

Under the plan, all meat, fish and chicken shops currently operating within the city will be moved to specially designated zones outside the urban area. Five locations have been identified for the relocation process, including Ramnagar, Dumri, Shivpur and Chhitaipur, while another site is expected to be finalised shortly.

The new market complexes will be equipped with essential infrastructure such as electricity, water supply, sanitation facilities and proper waste disposal systems. Municipal officials stated that these measures would ensure hygienic business operations while also addressing long-standing concerns related to waste accumulation and environmental management.

According to civic authorities, the relocation will help improve street cleanliness and reduce the burden on municipal workers responsible for managing waste generated by meat and fish markets. It is also expected to create a more organised urban environment and provide a cleaner atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.

The process of identifying and allocating authorised shops at the new locations is expected to begin soon. Shopkeepers operating within the city will be provided opportunities to move to the newly developed commercial zones where they can continue their businesses without disruption.

Varanasi Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari strongly supported the proposal, describing it as a necessary and timely initiative. He stated that a large number of meat and fish outlets currently functioning in the city are unauthorised or unregistered and that the relocation exercise will help bring them under a regulated framework.

“We will regularise these businesses and provide them with better facilities, including electricity, water and other essential services. We are also making arrangements for proper waste management so that garbage does not accumulate in public places,” the Mayor said.

He explained that the city would be divided into five zones for the purpose of relocating meat, fish and poultry shops. Dedicated areas outside the city limits will be developed to accommodate these businesses in an organised manner.

Emphasising that the decision is not intended to affect livelihoods, Tiwari clarified that the Municipal Corporation is not shutting down meat and fish shops. Instead, the objective is to relocate them to more suitable locations where they can operate efficiently while preserving the cultural atmosphere of the city.

“Kashi is a religious and cultural city visited by lakhs of devotees and tourists every year. People come here for its spiritual heritage and traditions. We are creating appropriate facilities for meat and fish traders outside the city limits, not removing their businesses,” he said.

The proposal has already received approval from the Municipal Corporation’s executive committee, and officials will now move forward with identifying and developing the designated sites. Once implemented, the initiative is expected to transform the city’s commercial landscape while supporting Varanasi’s efforts to strengthen its identity as one of India’s most revered pilgrimage destinations.
