Israeli Strikes Hit Targets in Iran as Regional Tensions Escalate
Tehran, June 2026: Tensions in West Asia intensified further early Monday after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed that Israeli forces had carried out attacks on targets inside Iranian territory, marking another significant escalation in the ongoing confrontation between the two countries.
According to Iran’s official news agency IRNA, the IRGC stated that the strikes were conducted using air-launched ballistic missiles. The announcement came after Iranian state media reported explosions in several major cities, including Tehran, Tabriz, Isfahan and Karaj.
The Israeli military later confirmed the operation. In a statement posted on its official channels, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that the Israeli Air Force had targeted military installations in western and central Iran. While details regarding the full extent of the damage were not immediately available, the strikes signalled a widening of direct military exchanges between the regional rivals.
One of the sites affected was the Karun petrochemical complex in Mahshahr, located in southwestern Iran. Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency, citing local officials, reported that the facility sustained partial damage after being struck by an Israeli projectile. The Israeli military subsequently acknowledged the strike.
The latest attacks come amid an already volatile security environment following missile exchanges between Iran and Israel over the past 24 hours.
Meanwhile, Israel reported another security threat from Yemen. The IDF announced that it had successfully intercepted a missile launched from Yemeni territory towards Israel on Monday morning. Air raid sirens were activated across parts of central Israel, including the Tel Aviv metropolitan area, before the missile was neutralised by Israeli air defence systems.
The Yemeni missile launch occurred only hours after Israel carried out strikes in Iran and amid broader regional tensions involving Iran-backed groups.
On Sunday, Iran’s IRGC launched ballistic missiles targeting the Ramat David Air Base in northern Israel. Tehran described the attack as retaliation for intensified Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon.
Iranian military officials also issued fresh warnings to Israel. Ali Abdollahi, Chief Commander of Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, said that any expansion of Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon or Beirut’s Dahieh district, or any further response to Iranian actions, would invite what he termed “crushing and regret-inducing blows.”
The Iranian missile launches triggered air raid sirens across northern Israel, although no immediate casualties or significant damage were reported. Israeli defence authorities said the country remained on high alert and prepared for further developments.
Israeli military chief Eyal Zamir stressed that the armed forces were ready to act decisively if required, stating that the military would strike its adversaries “with determination” whenever orders were issued.
The latest exchange of strikes underscores the fragile security situation in the region, with fears growing that continued retaliation by both sides could further widen the conflict and draw in additional regional actors.
