Rs 1,500 Crore Allocated for Development of Shri Ambabai Temple Complex and Corridor: Union Minister Amit Shah

Kolhapur, June 2026 : Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the historic Shri Ambabai (Mahalaxmi) Temple in Kolhapur, revered as the “Kashi of South India,” will be developed into a world-class temple corridor and heritage precinct with an investment of Rs 1,500 crore. He described the project as a matter of immense pride for devotees across the country.

Addressing a public gratitude ceremony held at the Police Headquarters Ground in Kolhapur, Shah said the ambitious project would transform the temple surroundings while preserving its rich religious and cultural heritage. The event was attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Guardian Minister Prakash Abitkar, and several ministers, legislators, MPs, and local dignitaries.

Shah stated that the ancient temple, which dates back to the 7th century, is one of India’s most significant spiritual centres. As part of the redevelopment initiative, around 41 small and large temples in the surrounding area will be conserved and integrated into the larger temple corridor project.

“The entire temple precinct will be developed over the next six months while ensuring the protection and preservation of its historic structures. This project is a proud moment for all devotees of Goddess Mahalaxmi,” Shah said.

He also indicated that the government is positively considering the establishment of an ‘Annachhatra’ (community dining facility) for pilgrims visiting the shrine.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to safeguarding India’s cultural and spiritual heritage, Shah said the administration under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently worked to preserve and promote the nation’s traditions. He also spoke about India’s progress in the fields of economy, defence, and national security during the Modi government’s tenure.

Referring to internal security, Shah warned that illegal infiltrators would be identified and dealt with firmly. He added that development activities in both rural and urban India are progressing rapidly under the Prime Minister’s leadership.

Kolhapur: A Centre of Spirituality and Cooperation

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the redevelopment of the Ambabai Temple area is part of a broader effort to revive India’s spiritual and cultural strength. He noted that major development works are underway at Maharashtra’s five Jyotirlinga shrines and at the nearby Jyotiba pilgrimage centre.

“The temple development plan has been designed with a long-term vision and will serve devotees for the next hundred years. Kolhapur is not only a major spiritual centre but also the birthplace of India’s cooperative movement,” Fadnavis said.

The Chief Minister praised Amit Shah’s leadership, stating that he has played a significant role in strengthening both national security and the cooperative sector.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the modernisation and beautification work launched at the temple complex would elevate Kolhapur’s stature as a major religious destination. He added that Maharashtra has always played a vital role in preserving India’s spiritual and cultural identity.

Guardian Minister Prakash Abitkar described the temple development project as a proud and historic moment for the people of Kolhapur. He expressed hope that the Centre would continue supporting infrastructure and development projects across Maharashtra.

Earlier, Amit Shah was felicitated with a statue of Goddess Mahalaxmi and a ceremonial sword. Following his address, the temple development master plan was formally presented to him by Guardian Minister Prakash Abitkar and Kolhapur Mayor Ruparani Nikam.

The programme witnessed a large public turnout, with extensive security arrangements in place. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif.
