Cape Verde Make World Cup History, Set Up Dream Round of 32 Clash with Argentina
Houston, June 2026 : Cape Verde scripted one of the greatest achievements in FIFA World Cup history by becoming the smallest nation ever to qualify for the Round of 32 after a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia in their final Group H encounter. The historic result secured second place in the group and earned the Blue Sharks a blockbuster knockout meeting with defending champions Argentina.
Score: Cape Verde 0-0 Saudi Arabia
The draw capped a remarkable group-stage campaign for Cape Verde, who remained unbeaten with three consecutive stalemates to finish second in Group H with three points. They edged past Saudi Arabia and two-time world champions Uruguay by a single point, ensuring their place in the knockout phase for the first time in the nation’s history.
Cape Verde will now face Lionel Messi-led Argentina at Miami Stadium on July 3 in what promises to be the biggest football match ever played by the island nation. The fixture represents a landmark moment for Cape Verdean football, with the tiny African country earning a place among the world’s elite despite being one of the tournament’s smallest participants.
Although neither side found the net, Cape Verde looked the more threatening throughout the contest and came closest to claiming all three points. Willy Semedo consistently troubled the Saudi defence, forcing goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais into a sharp save at his near post before narrowly missing the target with another effort.
Kevin Pina also came within inches of breaking the deadlock early in the second half when his powerful long-range strike flew just over the crossbar after beating the goalkeeper.
Saudi Arabia, needing a victory to keep their qualification hopes alive, struggled to create meaningful chances against Cape Verde’s disciplined defensive structure. Their best opportunity came in the closing stages when goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais produced an outstanding save to deny Laros Duarte, who had burst through the middle following a swift counterattack.
The stalemate ultimately suited Cape Verde, whose resolute defending and organised display ensured they held on to the point that secured a place in the knockout rounds.
The achievement also places Cape Verde among an exclusive group of African nations. They became only the third African side to progress through their maiden World Cup group-stage campaign without suffering a defeat, following Morocco’s achievement in 1986 and the performances of Cameroon and Nigeria during their respective campaigns in 1998 and 2014.
Elsewhere in the tournament, Belgium defeated Egypt to finish as winners of Group G, while Iran and Senegal remain in contention for qualification, either through second place or as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
South Africa also secured second place in Group A and will face Canada in Los Angeles, while South Korea confirmed progression as one of the best third-placed teams.
With the group stage nearing completion, the teams that have booked their places in the Round of 32 include Mexico, South Africa, Switzerland, Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Morocco, the United States, Australia, Paraguay, Germany, Côte d’Ivoire, Ecuador, the Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Belgium, Egypt, Spain, Cape Verde, France, Norway, Senegal, Argentina, Colombia, Portugal, England and Ghana.
The knockout phase begins on June 28, with Cape Verde’s historic showdown against reigning world champions Argentina set to be one of the most anticipated fixtures of the Round of 32.
