Tamil Nadu to Accord Full State Honours to Veteran Filmmaker K. Bhagyaraj, Announces Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay

Chennai, June 2026 : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Saturday announced that legendary filmmaker, actor and screenwriter K. Bhagyaraj will be accorded full state honours during his final rites, paying tribute to one of the most influential personalities in the history of Tamil cinema. Bhagyaraj passed away earlier in the day after suffering a massive cardiac arrest. He was 73.

Expressing profound grief over the veteran filmmaker’s demise, the Chief Minister described Bhagyaraj’s death as an irreparable loss to Tamil cinema and acknowledged his extraordinary contribution to the film industry over several decades.

In an official statement shared through the Chief Minister’s Office on social media platform X, Vijay said he was deeply shocked by the passing of a creative genius who excelled in multiple facets of filmmaking.

“Director K. Bhagyaraj not only distinguished himself as an accomplished filmmaker but also made remarkable contributions as an actor, screenplay writer, dialogue writer and music director. His unique storytelling style earned him an everlasting place in the hearts of millions of Tamil people,” the Chief Minister stated.

He said Bhagyaraj’s films, known for their blend of humour, emotional depth and relatable storytelling, reflected the values, traditions and lifestyles of rural Tamil Nadu while highlighting the importance of family relationships and human emotions.

According to Vijay, Bhagyaraj’s cinema transcended entertainment by carrying meaningful social messages that resonated with audiences across generations.

“Through his distinctive narratives, witty dialogues and memorable performances, he created timeless classics that will continue to inspire filmmakers and entertain audiences for years to come. His works also conveyed valuable human and social ideals that remain relevant even today,” the Chief Minister said.

Calling Bhagyaraj’s demise “an irreplaceable loss” for the Tamil film fraternity, Vijay conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, relatives, friends, admirers and members of the cinema industry.

“I extend my deepest sympathies to his wife, children, family members, colleagues, fans and everyone associated with him. I pray that his noble soul rests in eternal peace at the divine feet of the Almighty,” the statement added.

The Chief Minister further announced that the Tamil Nadu government would accord full state honours during Bhagyaraj’s final journey in recognition of his immense contribution to Indian cinema.

“In honour of Thiru K. Bhagyaraj’s unparalleled services to the film industry and as a mark of the State’s respect, full state honours will be accorded during his final rites,” Vijay declared.

Bhagyaraj, widely regarded as one of India’s finest screenplay writers and among the greatest storytellers in Tamil cinema, reportedly complained of severe chest pain after returning from his morning walk on Saturday. Family members immediately rushed him to a private hospital in Chennai, where doctors declared him dead despite efforts to revive him.

His sudden demise has sent shockwaves across the Indian film industry, triggering an outpouring of grief from actors, directors, producers, technicians, political leaders and countless fans.

The tragedy has been made even more poignant as Bhagyaraj’s passing comes just 17 days after the death of his mentor and another towering figure of Tamil cinema, veteran filmmaker K. Bharathirajaa. The loss of two iconic directors within such a short span has left the Tamil film fraternity mourning the end of an era.

Throughout his illustrious career spanning several decades, Bhagyaraj carved a niche for himself through his distinctive style of filmmaking that seamlessly combined humour, romance, family drama and social commentary. His scripts were celebrated for their simplicity, emotional appeal and intelligent dialogue, making him one of the most admired writer-directors in Indian cinema.

Apart from directing numerous blockbuster films, Bhagyaraj also enjoyed immense popularity as an actor, screenplay writer and dialogue writer. Several of his films were later remade in multiple Indian languages, further cementing his reputation as one of the country’s most influential filmmakers.

Following the announcement of state honours, tributes continued to pour in from across the country, with leading personalities from the film industry remembering Bhagyaraj not only as a legendary filmmaker but also as a mentor whose work inspired generations of writers, directors and actors. His enduring cinematic legacy, they said, will continue to shape Indian cinema for many years to come.
