Mumbai, Feb 2026 : The United States Ambassador to India, Sergio Mor, met ICC Chairman Jay Shah at the iconic Wankhede Stadium during the high-profile India vs USA match in the T20 World Cup 2026, highlighting the growing global footprint of cricket and the sport’s rapid expansion in the United States.
Sharing his experience on social media platform X, Ambassador Mor described the interaction as a productive and memorable one. “A pleasure meeting with @ICC Chairman @JayShah at the #T20WorldCup today. We discussed the exponential growth of cricket in the United States with our world-class infrastructure, star talent, and incredible fans,” he wrote. The meeting underlined the increasing collaboration between global cricket administrators and emerging cricketing nations such as the USA, which has been investing heavily in infrastructure, leagues, and grassroots development.
On the sidelines of the match, Ambassador Mor also met prominent Indian industrialist Mukesh Ambani and Nita Ambani, expressing delight at reconnecting with them during the marquee tournament. The presence of international dignitaries and business leaders further reflected cricket’s growing stature as a global sport and its ability to bring together diplomacy, business, and entertainment on one platform.
On the field, India registered a face-saving 29-run victory over the USA in a closely watched Group A encounter. Skipper Suryakumar Yadav led from the front, scoring a magnificent unbeaten 84, marking a memorable half-century in his debut match as captain in the T20 World Cup. His composed and attacking innings helped India post a modest total of 161 for 9 after being put under pressure early in the innings.
India entered the home World Cup as the defending champions, carrying the weight of expectations for a historic third title. However, the build-up was marred by setbacks, with all-rounder Harshit Rana ruled out due to injury on the eve of the opener, followed by pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah sitting out the match because of illness.
In the bowling department, Mohammad Siraj, drafted in as a last-minute replacement, made a decisive impact with figures of 3 for 29. He was well supported by Arshdeep Singh (2 for 18) and Axar Patel (2 for 24), as India restricted the USA to 132 for 9 in 20 overs. Despite a spirited effort from the American side, India’s experience ultimately proved decisive at the Wankhede Stadium.
