KL Rahul’s Majestic Century Powers Karnataka Past Mumbai into Ranji Semifinals
Mumbai, Feb 2026 : India’s star batter KL Rahul delivered a masterclass under pressure, scoring a sublime 24th first-class century to steer Karnataka to a memorable four-wicket victory over 42-time champions Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy 2025–26 quarterfinal at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy, Bandra-Kurla Complex, on Monday.
Chasing a daunting target of 325 runs in the fourth innings against Mumbai’s seasoned bowling line-up, Karnataka endured an early setback when opener Mayank Agarwal was dismissed in just the second over by Mumbai captain Shardul Thakur. The early loss, however, failed to dent Karnataka’s resolve as Rahul walked in with calm assurance.
Devdutt Padikkal, batting at number three, continued his impressive form and provided solid support to Rahul. The duo stitched together a crucial 84-run partnership, stabilising the innings and steadily building momentum. Padikkal looked fluent before being dismissed in the 20th over by off-spinner Tanush Kotiyan, after playing a valuable knock that laid the foundation for the chase.
Rahul, meanwhile, remained unfazed and focused on rotating the strike and punishing loose deliveries. He was joined by Karun Nair, who contributed a handy 23 runs before falling in the 31st over. With Karnataka still needing a substantial number of runs, the pressure was firmly on the visitors.
The turning point of the match came when Rahul found an able partner in young batter Smaran Ravichandran. The pair batted with maturity and confidence, adding a match-winning 147-run partnership that took the game away from Mumbai. Rahul reached his century off 147 balls, drawing applause for his composure and shot selection. By the lunch break, Karnataka were firmly in control at 265 for three.
Rahul’s brilliant innings eventually ended early in the post-lunch session when he was dismissed by Tushar Deshpande. His knock of 130 off 182 balls, laced with 14 fours and a six, proved decisive in one of the most challenging run chases of the season.
Smaran Ravichandran carried on till the end, displaying remarkable temperament. Already a prolific performer with over 1,000 first-class runs, Smaran remained unbeaten on 83, anchoring the chase as Vidyadhar Patil struck the winning runs in the 74th over to seal Karnataka’s victory.
Earlier in the match, Karnataka had gained the upper hand by bowling Mumbai out for just 120 on Day 1, with Prasidh Krishna and Vidweth Kaverappa leading a disciplined bowling effort. Karnataka responded with 173 in their first innings, taking a 53-run lead, largely thanks to Mayank Agarwal’s fighting 92.
Mumbai mounted a strong comeback in their second innings, posting 377 runs through solid contributions from Akash Anand (70) and Musheer Khan (49), setting Karnataka a stiff target. However, Rahul’s brilliance ensured Karnataka crossed the line and booked a semifinal clash with Uttarakhand, who will be making their maiden semifinal appearance in Ranji Trophy history.
