Chief Secretary Reviews Consumer Affairs and Food & Civil Supplies Departments
Jaipur, February 2026 : The Chief Secretary V. Srinivas on Thursday chaired a review meeting of the Consumer Affairs Department and the Food & Civil Supplies Department at the Secretariat. He said that consumer justice and protection are the core objectives of the department, and reducing the backlog of cases in district and state consumer commissions is vital to ensure effective justice for consumers.
Mandatory daily disposal targets for Consumer Commissions
In view of the large number of pending cases, Rajasthan is set to become the first state where presidents of state and district consumer commissions will be required to deliver a fixed number of decisions each day. Acting on the Chief Secretary’s directions, the State Consumer Commission issued a circular on Thursday mandating daily disposal targets based on working days. Failure to meet these targets may invite action on the recommendation of the State Commission. This move is expected to ensure faster and time-bound consumer justice. The Chief Secretary also directed that regular meetings of all district consumer commissions be held to ensure timely and accessible justice for the public.
Consumer helpline to be made more user-friendly
The Chief Secretary instructed that the consumer helpline under the Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanism be further strengthened. He emphasized specialized training for helpline staff to enhance behavioral skills and ensure sensitive, effective assistance to consumers. Officials were asked to analyze daily call volumes, call duration, and resolved cases to continuously improve the helpline’s performance.
Use digital platforms to raise awareness on schemes and consumer rights
Directing officials to leverage popular digital platforms, the Chief Secretary stressed the need to widely disseminate information about departmental welfare schemes and consumer rights. He said departmental websites should provide comprehensive, easily accessible information for the general public.
The Governance Secretary of the Food & Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Departments, Ambrish Kumar, assured that the Chief Secretary’s directions would be implemented effectively and promptly.
