From Garbage to Glory: Dumping Ground Transformed into ‘Tribal Pride Garden’

Raipur, February 2026: The Tribal Pride Garden has today emerged as a remarkable example of development, environmental conservation, and employment generation in Bastar district. Located in the Kumharkot area of Jagdalpur, the site was once a dumping ground plagued by filth and encroachments. It has now been transformed into a beautiful tourist destination and a hub of self-employment.

This transformation has been made possible through a special initiative of the Forest Department and the effective implementation of government schemes.

Under the guidance of Forest Minister Kedar Kashyap and the leadership of Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Arun Kumar Pandey, comprehensive development work was carried out in the area. After cleaning the reserved forest compartment number 1021, a 1,700-metre-long nature trail was developed. A scenic pond and an attractive island were also created. Facilities such as a yoga platform, yoga shed, and an open gym have been set up for public health and recreation. Five aesthetically designed pagodas for seating and a charming bridge further enhance the appeal of the garden.

A key highlight of the Tribal Pride Garden is its rich greenery. Medicinal plants, fruit-bearing trees, and various species of bamboo have been planted across the site. The entire garden has been developed as an eco-friendly, plastic-free zone. The initiative goes beyond environmental restoration, as it has also created livelihood opportunities for local women.

A women’s self-help group manages the Jungle Canteen at the site, where visitors can enjoy traditional local cuisine. According to Divisional Forest Officer Uttam Kumar Gupta, this initiative has made a group of 20 women self-reliant. More than 10,000 tourists have visited the garden so far, generating an income of nearly ₹2 lakh for the women’s group.

Today, the Tribal Pride Garden has become a preferred destination for city residents for morning walks, yoga, and peaceful recreation. The journey “from garbage to glory” demonstrates that with proper planning, strong leadership, and public participation, any neglected space can be transformed. This success story stands as an inspiring model of environmental conservation and women’s empowerment.
