Russia Claims Capture of Konstantinovka, Putin Calls It a Major Strategic Victory

Moscow, July 2026 : Russia on Friday claimed that its armed forces had taken full control of the eastern Ukrainian city of Konstantinovka, describing the development as a significant strategic gain in the ongoing conflict. The announcement was made by Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, who said Russian troops had completed the capture of the key city in Ukraine’s Donetsk region.

Konstantinovka has long been regarded as one of Ukraine’s important defensive positions in Donbas due to its role as a major industrial centre and transportation hub connecting several frontline areas.

Russian President Vladimir Putin hailed the reported capture while visiting a temporary command post of the joint force grouping, calling it a major milestone in Moscow’s military campaign.

According to Putin, the city’s capture holds “great strategic significance” because of its logistical importance and industrial infrastructure. He also claimed that since the beginning of 2026, Russian forces have taken control of 133 settlements and more than 3,000 square kilometres of territory across the Donbas and Novorossiya regions.

The Russian leader further asserted that Moscow had recently completed what he described as the “full liberation” of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic. He said military units were continuing to operate in accordance with plans drawn up by Russia’s General Staff and were pressing ahead with operations in the Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions.

Putin also linked Russia’s military actions to what he described as repeated Ukrainian attacks on civilian infrastructure inside Russian territory. He said Moscow would continue expanding a “security buffer zone” along the border if such attacks persisted.

“The more attempts the enemy makes to strike civilian facilities, the larger the security buffer zone we will have to establish in the adjacent territory,” Putin said, arguing that Russia’s military operations were aimed at protecting civilians and critical infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Russian authorities reported fresh drone attacks targeting the capital. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said air defence systems intercepted 28 drones heading toward the city since the start of Friday.

In his latest update, Sobyanin said eight additional drones were shot down on Friday night before reaching Moscow. Emergency response teams were deployed to locations where drone debris had fallen, though no immediate information was released regarding casualties or major damage.

The claims regarding the capture of Konstantinovka and other battlefield developments could not be independently verified. Ukraine had not immediately issued an official response to Russia’s announcement.

The reported advances come as fighting continues across eastern and southern Ukraine, with both sides intensifying military operations amid ongoing drone strikes and artillery exchanges. The conflict remains one of the most significant security crises in Europe, with no immediate breakthrough in peace efforts despite continued international diplomatic engagement.
