West Indies Unleash Late Firepower to Post 195/4 Against India in Must-Win Super Eights Clash

Kolkata, Mar 2026 : A commanding late assault powered by Jason Holder and Rovman Powell, backed by solid middle-order contributions, lifted West Indies to an imposing 195/4 against India at Eden Gardens on Sunday in a high-pressure Super Eights encounter of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. With both teams needing a win to stay alive in the tournament, the Caribbean side produced a fearless batting display that tilted the contest firmly in their favour.

Asked to bat first after India opted to field in what was effectively a virtual quarter-final, West Indies began with composure rather than fireworks. Openers Shai Hope and Roston Chase focused on building a platform, negotiating the early movement generated by Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya. The pair rotated the strike smartly, finding the occasional boundary while ensuring wickets were preserved during the Powerplay.

Their stand proved significant, becoming the first 50-plus opening partnership conceded by India in this tournament. Hope struggled to break free consistently but held one end up, allowing Chase to settle into a rhythm. The partnership eventually yielded 66 runs before India struck back. Varun Chakaravarthy delivered a skidding ball that breached Hope’s defence, ending his knock at 32 off 33 balls and giving the hosts a much-needed breakthrough.

Chase, however, carried on with assurance, blending clean strokeplay with clever placement. He found able support in Shimron Hetmyer, whose brief stay transformed the tempo of the innings. Hetmyer blasted 27 off just 12 balls, launching two towering sixes and putting pressure back on the Indian bowlers during the middle overs.

Just as West Indies looked set to surge ahead, Jasprit Bumrah delivered a decisive spell. In the 12th over, he removed Hetmyer, who edged behind while attempting to force the pace, and followed it up by dismissing Chase for a well-crafted 40 off 25 balls. Chase’s innings had anchored the West Indies effort, and his departure at 103/3 opened a window for India to claw back control.

That opportunity seemed to widen when Hardik Pandya accounted for Sherfane Rutherford, leaving West Indies at 118/4. With wickets down and overs running out, India sensed a chance to restrict the total to a manageable range. What followed, however, was a dramatic shift in momentum.

Rovman Powell and Jason Holder launched a ferocious counterattack, starting with a punishing 16th over from Arshdeep Singh that produced 24 runs. The duo targeted both pace and spin, with Holder especially effective against Varun Chakaravarthy, dispatching him for a six and a four to swing the momentum decisively.

India’s fielding woes compounded their problems, as a few missed chances allowed the West Indies pair to press harder. Powell played the aggressor’s role with a muscular 34 off 19 balls, while Holder showcased his finishing prowess with an unbeaten 37 off 22 deliveries. The highlight came in the final over when Holder sent Bumrah soaring over the ropes, a rare sight given the pacer’s reputation.

West Indies plundered 70 runs in the final five overs, transforming what looked like a competitive score into a daunting target. Bumrah finished with creditable figures of 2/36, but the inability to contain the late surge proved costly for India.

With 195 on the board in a winner-takes-all contest and a potential semi-final showdown awaiting the victor, West Indies seized the initiative emphatically. The onus now shifts to the defending champions to produce a special chase, while the two-time champions from the Caribbean will fancy their chances of knocking the hosts out of the race.

Brief Scores: West Indies 195/4 in 20 overs (Roston Chase 40, Jason Holder 37*, Rovman Powell 34*; Jasprit Bumrah 2/36) vs India.
