Indonesia Retracts From Donald Trump’s Board Of Peace.

Jakarta; March 2026: Indonesia has suspended all discussions on the Board of Peace initiative launched by US President Donald Trump, citing the military escalation in the Middle East, as per the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today, 07th March 2026.

Foreign Minister Sugiono said the decision was taken in response to the latest developments in the region, according to Middle East Monitor. He said the escalation had directly affected the foreign policy priorities of countries involved in the initiative. The minister has further cited, that international attention had shifted toward the consequences of the conflict involving Iran.

He added that Indonesia would carry out intensive consultations with partners in the Gulf region, which he said are directly affected by the ongoing attacks and rising tensions. Indonesia’s participation in the initiative has also faced criticism from domestic political and religious groups. Critics argue that joining a council led by the Trump administration could undermine Indonesia’s longstanding position supporting the Palestinian cause.

In the same context, the Indonesian Ulema Council called for an immediate withdrawal from the initiative. The council said the body lacks effectiveness while military operations in the region continue.

The decision to suspend participation comes as regional tensions remain high and diplomatic discussions surrounding the initiative face increasing scrutiny.

Earlier, on Wednesday (04th March), the Indonesian Foreign Minister had discussions with his Saudi and Emirati counterparts, stressing respect for the sovereignty of the Gulf nations amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. Indonesia remains steadfast in supporting all efforts toward de-escalation, he added.

Sugiono, who is known by only one name, spoke with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan, expressing deep concern over the joint military campaign by the US and Israel against Iran.

“I underscored the importance of upholding sovereignty and territorial integrity in accordance with international law and the UN Charter”, he said in a post on the US social media company X’s platform.

He had also conveyed Indonesia’s continued support for de-escalation and called on all parties to “exercise maximum restraint”.

In his conversation with United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Sugiono exchanged views on current developments in the Middle East, including the UAE’s assessment of the Iranian strikes on its territory. “I conveyed Indonesia’s sympathy for the human loss and reaffirmed our principled position on respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as upholding international law and the principles of the UN Charter”, Sugiono said in a separate post on X.

Yesterday, the Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto told Islamic scholars in Jakarta, that his country will withdraw from the Board of Peace, initiated by US President Donald Trump, if it fails to support Palestinian independence.

The Indonesian President has conveyed the position during a meeting with more than 160 Islamic scholars at the presidential palace in Jakarta, cited Cholil Nafis, deputy chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI). The president is “determined to direct it (Board of Peace) toward Palestinian independence. He is ready to withdraw if the council fails to advocate for this cause”, Nafis told reporters after the meeting with Prabowo.

He said the Indonesian government intends to use its role in the forum to advocate for Palestinian interests. Separately, Nafis suggested that Indonesia should prioritise diplomatic efforts through international institutions such as the UN and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation for the Palestinian cause.

Prabowo had previously raised the possibility of leaving the initiative during another meeting last month with religious leaders in Jakarta. Last month, during the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace in Washington, DC, Prabowo pledged 8,000 or more troops to the International Stabilisation Force in Gaza.

Trump announced the establishment of the “Board of Peace” on January 15th as part of his broader plan for Gaza, after a ceasefire agreement was reached on October 10th, 2025. The board was authorized by UN Security Council Resolution 2803 in November 2025. But, in a sharp contrast Israel has killed 618 Palestinians and wounded 1,663 in daily ceasefire violations involving strikes and gunfire since a ceasefire agreement took effect last October

The ceasefire followed the genocidal war launched by Israel on October 08th, 2023, that lasted two years and killed more than 72,000 Palestinians and wounded over 171,000, most of them women and children, and destroyed about 90% of civilian infrastructure in the territory.
