Sanju Samson’s Emotional Journey to World Cup Hero with Sachin Tendulkar’s Guidance
Ahmedabad, March 2026 :In a moment filled with pride, relief and deep emotion, Sanju Samson revealed that constant guidance from cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar played a crucial role in helping him overcome setbacks and deliver a Player of the Tournament performance during India national cricket team’s triumphant campaign in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
Speaking after India’s historic victory over New Zealand national cricket team in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Samson opened up about the emotional and mental journey that shaped his remarkable comeback.
The wicketkeeper-batter said he had received valuable advice from several senior players, but his conversations with Tendulkar in recent months proved especially transformative.
“To be very honest, a lot of guidance came from senior players in the side and even former Indian cricketers who reached out to help me. But over the last couple of months, I have been in constant touch with Sachin Tendulkar sir,” Samson said during the post-match presentation.
He recalled how those conversations began during a difficult period when he found himself out of the playing XI while the team was touring Australia.
“When I was sitting outside in Australia and not playing, I started thinking about the mindset I needed. I reached out to sir and had long conversations with him. Even yesterday, he called me to check how I was feeling,” Samson shared.
For Samson, the opportunity to receive guidance from one of the greatest players in cricket history was invaluable.
“Getting guidance from someone like him—what more can I ask for? The clarity, the preparation, the awareness of the game… I’m extremely grateful to everyone who supported me,” he added.
A Redemption Story
Samson’s performances in the tournament capped an extraordinary comeback story. Just two years ago, during India’s victorious campaign in the 2024 T20 World Cup, he did not get a chance to play a single match. Despite being part of the squad, he remained on the sidelines, watching the team lift the trophy.
Instead of letting disappointment consume him, Samson used the experience as motivation.
“When I was with the 2024 World Cup-winning team in the West Indies, I didn’t get to play a game. But I kept visualising. I kept dreaming. I kept working hard,” he said.
His chance finally came during the current tournament when he was drafted back into the playing XI during the Super Eights stage.
From that moment onward, Samson transformed the competition with a series of spectacular performances.
A Tournament to Remember
The turning point came in a must-win clash against the West Indies national cricket team, where Samson delivered a breathtaking unbeaten 97, an innings that revived India’s campaign.
He continued his brilliant form in the knockout stages, scoring 89 in the semi-final against England national cricket team and following it up with another 89 in the final against New Zealand.
With those back-to-back match-winning knocks, Samson became only the third player in T20 World Cup history to score such high-impact innings in both the semi-final and the final.
Across the tournament, he amassed 321 runs, averaging 80.25 with a staggering strike rate of 199.37, numbers that earned him the prestigious Player of the Tournament award.
A Dream Fulfilled
Despite the statistics and accolades, Samson struggled to put his emotions into words.
“Honestly, it feels like a dream. I’m very happy, very grateful. I’m out of words and emotions right now. It feels surreal,” he admitted.
For Samson, the journey was not without heartbreak. After a disappointing bilateral T20I series against New Zealand earlier in the year, where he managed only 46 runs, he feared that his dream of performing in a World Cup might never come true.
“Right after the New Zealand series, I was completely shattered. I felt like my dreams had ended and I didn’t know what else I could do,” he said.
But fate had other plans.
Soon after, he was recalled into the team for crucial matches in the World Cup. When the opportunity came, Samson seized it with determination and fearless batting.
“God had different plans. I suddenly came back into the important games and I did what I could for my country,” he reflected.
Gratitude and Pride
Looking back at the journey—from being left out of the playing XI to becoming the hero of India’s World Cup triumph—Samson said he felt immense pride in never giving up on his dream.
“I’m very proud and happy that I had the courage to keep dreaming. Things have turned out beautifully for me,” he said.
For now, Samson plans to simply soak in the moment.
“This is very big for me. I just want to enjoy it right now. After a few days, we’ll think about what comes next,” he concluded.
From uncertainty to glory, Samson’s journey in the 2026 T20 World Cup will be remembered not just for the runs he scored, but for the resilience, belief, and inspiration behind them.
