Belgium Stage Stunning 3-2 Comeback Against Senegal to Reach FIFA World Cup Round of 16

Score: Belgium 3 (Romelu Lukaku 86′, Youri Tielemans 89′, 120+ Pen) beat Senegal 2 (Habib Diarra 26′, Ismaila Sarr 53′)

Seattle, July 2026 : Belgium produced one of the most dramatic comebacks of the FIFA World Cup 2026, overturning a two-goal deficit in the closing stages to defeat Senegal 3-2 after extra time in a thrilling Round of 32 clash at Seattle Stadium and secure a place in the Round of 16.

Trailing 2-0 with just five minutes of normal time remaining, Belgium appeared destined for an early exit before veteran striker Romelu Lukaku sparked an incredible revival. Midfielder Youri Tielemans then struck twice, including a decisive penalty deep into extra time, to complete a remarkable turnaround.

The victory marked only the second time Belgium have recovered from a two-goal deficit to win a World Cup knockout match, the first being their memorable 3-2 triumph over Japan in the Round of 16 at the 2018 World Cup.

Senegal dominated the early exchanges and deservedly took the lead in the 26th minute. Habib Diarra reacted quickest inside the penalty area after a teammate’s header crashed against the post, calmly converting the rebound to give the African side a 1-0 advantage.

Belgium attempted to respond before the break, creating several opportunities, with Maxim De Cuyper testing the Senegal defence with a powerful long-range effort. However, Senegal’s disciplined backline stood firm to preserve their lead heading into half-time.

Belgium coach Rudi Garcia made a bold tactical move by introducing Romelu Lukaku at the start of the second half in search of greater attacking firepower. However, the change initially failed to produce the desired impact as Senegal doubled their lead shortly after the restart.

Ismaila Sarr finished off a swift attacking move in the 53rd minute, leaving Belgium staring at elimination with more than half an hour remaining. Senegal defended confidently and looked on course for a famous victory as time continued to slip away from the European side.

The momentum shifted dramatically in the closing minutes. In the 86th minute, Thomas Meunier delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area, and Lukaku was perfectly positioned to steer the ball home, reducing the deficit and breathing fresh life into Belgium’s campaign.

Just three minutes later, Belgium drew level through Tielemans, who rose above the Senegal defence to head home a precise cross from Leandro Trossard, sending the contest into extra time.

As both teams battled through the additional period, a penalty shootout seemed inevitable. However, another dramatic twist arrived when the referee awarded Belgium a penalty following a VAR review after Tielemans was fouled inside the box.

The midfielder stepped up confidently and converted from the spot, completing Belgium’s sensational comeback and triggering jubilant celebrations among the players and supporters.

Senegal had one final opportunity from a late free-kick, but they were unable to find an equaliser as Belgium held on for a memorable victory.

Belgium will now remain in Seattle for their Round of 16 encounter on July 6, where they will face either hosts the United States or Bosnia and Herzegovina as they continue their quest for World Cup glory.
