Telangana CM Revanth Reddy Pushes for World-Class Sports Infrastructure to Produce Olympic Athletes
Hyderabad, March 2026 : Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Monday emphasized the need to create world-class sports infrastructure in the state, particularly at the proposed Young India Sports University, with the goal of producing Olympic-level athletes and strengthening Telangana’s presence on the global sporting stage.
Chairing a review meeting with officials from the Department of Sports Telangana, the Chief Minister discussed plans to establish international-standard facilities at the upcoming sports university and to upgrade major stadiums across the state. The meeting focused on developing advanced training infrastructure that can nurture young talent and support athletes competing at national and international levels.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, Revanth Reddy directed officials to ensure that the Young India Sports University is equipped with all the necessary facilities required to train athletes with the ambition of excelling at the Olympic Games. He stressed that the university should function as a comprehensive training hub, providing athletes with world-class coaching, modern sports science support, and high-quality infrastructure.
The Chief Minister also instructed officials to undertake major renovation works at the Gachibowli Outdoor Stadium. Plans include the development of an indoor stadium, a university complex, hostel facilities for athletes, and dedicated sports grounds for multiple disciplines. These facilities, he said, should be designed to support athletes through every stage of their training and preparation.
During the meeting, officials presented several architectural designs and development proposals for the sports university and related infrastructure. Revanth Reddy carefully reviewed the plans and offered suggestions aimed at improving functionality, accessibility, and long-term sustainability of the facilities.
The Chief Minister also directed officials to prepare long-term strategies that could help position Telangana as a potential host for major global sporting events such as the Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games. He noted that building modern infrastructure and nurturing talented athletes would not only enhance the state’s sporting ecosystem but also strengthen the performance of Telangana athletes in global competitions.
In addition to the new university project, the Chief Minister asked officials to modernise several existing sports facilities across the state. These include the Kotla Vijayabhaskara Reddy Stadium, Lal Bahadur Stadium, and Saroornagar Stadium, which will be upgraded to meet future requirements for training, competitions, and hosting major sporting events.
The meeting was attended by Sports and Youth Services Minister Vakiti Srihari and Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy, along with several senior officials. Others present included former adviser to the Chief Minister Vem Narender Reddy, Chairman of the Sports Authority of Telangana Shiva Sena Reddy, Chief Secretary K. Ramkrishna Rao, Principal Secretaries Srinivas Raju and Sheshadri, Managing Director of the Sports Authority Soni Baladevi, and Vice-Chancellor of the Young India Sports University G. Kishore.
The Telangana government had earlier introduced a comprehensive sports policy aimed at transforming the state into a major sports hub and establishing it as a global leader in sports development. As part of this vision, the government constituted the Board of Governors for the Sports Hub of Telangana, bringing together eminent sports personalities such as Kapil Dev, Pullela Gopichand, Baichung Bhutia, Abhinav Bindra, and Ravikanth Reddy.
Officials said the government’s long-term plan is to create a strong sports ecosystem that will encourage participation at the grassroots level while also preparing elite athletes capable of representing India on the world stage.
